Meet Your 2025 DeLand Suns Coaches and Staff
Head Coach: Cameron Jergens
Jergens is returning for his second year as head coach of the Suns. His first season at the helm saw him lead the team to a 16-15 record and an appearance in the FCSL championship, which he says he hopes to win this season.
Jergens was raised in Centreville, Michigan. After attending and paying for Centreville High School, he would play at Daytona State for three seasons. in 2012, he was named NJCAA Academic All-American. After that, he transferred to North Carolina A&T State, where he shined as a two-way player, earning All MEAC honors.m
After his playing career, Jergens transitioned into coaching. In 2015, he took on the hitting coach role at Coker University, a division two program in South Carolina. He then became the summer head coach for the St. Charles Captains in the Lewis and Clark collegiate baseball league, guiding the team to a historic victory in 2016. The Captains became the first team to clinch the title after making the playoffs as a wild card team. Since 2017, Jergens has served as the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator for Daytona State.
Jergens is a huge Detroit Tigers fans and says he enjoys going to MLB games. Outside of baseball, his hobbies include fishing and doing yard work. He has three brothers and currently has a dog named Molly.
Pitching Coach: Mike Powers
Coaching the Suns pitchers this season is Mike Powers. After a playing career that saw him pitch for both Stetson University and Kentucky Wesleyan in college, as well as spending three years in the minor leagues as part of the Oakland A’s and Montreal Expos systems, Powers transitioned into coaching.
He spent 27 years as the head coach at Seminole High School. He led the team to a state title and mentored future players, including future All-Star and 2006 World Series MVP David Eckstein.
Powers has been with the Suns for 10 years, even at one point serving as the team’s head coach for a few seasons.
Outside of baseball, powers enjoying working out with his wife Jane and working on his front yard. He has three grandchildren, one of whom is also a coach for the Suns.
First Base/ Bullpen Coach: Carson Walden
Walden is heading into his third season as a coach with the Suns, as well as his 14th overall season with the team. He began working with the Suns when he was four-years-old as a bat boy, which he says he got did because of his grandfather Coach Powers.
Walden played baseball until his freshmen year at Seminole High School, a school he now coaches for.
The 18-year-old is the youngest of 3 brothers. Outside of baseball, he enjoys going to the gym. His goal is to become a police officer. He will be attending the Seminole State Law Enforcement Academy in the fall and then plans to peruse a masters degree in Criminal Justice.
Catching/ Third Base Coach: Sean McArdle
Though this will be his first season coaching in the league, McArdle is no stranger to the FCSL or the Suns. While in college he played for the Suns for four years.
McArdle’s playing career saw him spend one season at St. Johns, two seasons and Daytona State and one season at Valdosta State. Hercules transitioned into coaching this past spring by joining the Daytona State coaching staff, where he got to work with Suns head coach Cameron Jergens
McArdle will be working with the catchers and corner infielders this season and says he is “excited for this (Suns) team because Cam (Jergens) turned a team that was notoriously low in the ranking into a runner up bringing them to the championship in his first year. So expect hardware in Deland.”
Outside of baseball he enjoys being outdoors and on the water fishing. His favorite movie is Office Space and he enjoys listening to a wide variety of music, including 8. jazz, blues, rock, country and “a little rap.”
General Manager: Will Rich
Will is from Longmont, Colorado and currently an integrated business major at the University of Central Florida. He says he is “looking forward to meeting the players and overseeing operations for the team’s playing environment m.”
Team Operations: Zach Weaver
Zach is a 19-year-old sports management major attending Kansas Wesleyan University. He is from Oviedo and says that he is “excited to see the players and team succeed.”
Team Communications: Nick Porcelli
Nick is a 22-year-old from Tampa. He graduated from of the University Of Central Florida earlier in May with a degree in Journalism. This past year he worked as a communications intern for the UCF athletic department and he hopes to continue to continue in that field by becoming an SID at a college or pro team. Nick enjoys running and listening to music in his free time.
