Weekend Recap: Can't Win Forever
Everything was going just about perfectly for the Fayetteville FireAntz in the month of February. Sean Bonar was the SPHL's best goaltender, multiple players had point streaks, and the team had climbed as high as 4th in the league standings. The FireAntz began their second conecutive 3 in 3 weekend with a victory against heated rival Roanoke, with Taylor Thompson providing much of the offense in a 4-2 contest.
The second opponent of the weekend was the Columbus Cottonmouths, a team that has been one of the backmarkers in the league standings but had been playing well of late in spite of a very trying year. The goals were rolling in for Fayetteville in the opening period as they got three past goaltender Mavric Parks in just five minutes courtesy of Evan Dixon, Jake Hauswirth and Joe Kalisz.
Dixon made coach Jeff Bes proud with another goal in the 3rd period to seal a 6-3 FireAntz win, their 4th game in a row scoring at least 4 goals. Bes had praised Dixon earlier in the week for being easily one of the hardest working guys he had come across in coaching.
With a victory on Sunday, the FireAntz had a chance to get the second longest winning streak in the SPHL this season, but Columbus came back playing a much more even game in a contest where the neutral zone was the battle ground. In the final frame, Columbus' David Watt finally broke the tie on the power play, lifting a beautiful back handed shot above Sean Bonar. The FireAntz winning streak ended at 8 games, yet they still sit solidly in the top five of the SPHL standings.
The next weekend up for the FireAntz will be consecutive dates against the top two teams in the league. They will host the Huntsville Havoc on February 17th for military night before taking to the road against the Macon Mayhem. With a clean slate, perhaps the winning in bulk may start all over again.
