The Goulbourn Hornets Novice Girls team returned home from the DC Slam Durham Classic Tournament this past weekend with silver medals! It was the team's first opportunity to play an out of town tournament and face some new competition and they played extremely well.
The Hornets opened the tournament strong with a 29-14 win over the North Toronto Huskies. A well played game of offensive and tough defense sent the Hornets to their second game of the round robin against the Peterborough Power where they again used their speed and team work to defeat the Peterborough Power 21-14.
With a 2-0 record the Hornets automatically advanced to the gold medal game where they faced the host DC Chameleons.
The two teams were initially set to play one another in a round robin game, but due to inclement weather the teams decided it was in everyone's best interest to make the one game the championship final rather than play one another twice in a matter of hours.
In the final the Hornets faced its stiffest competition of the season. Down 11-2 at the half, the Hornets played a great second half, but were unable to close the gap and settled for a 20-10 final. The Hornets defensive play was rewarded as they held the Chameleons to a season low 20 points.
