Oakland ACHA DI Hockey general manager Corey Hagood is pleased to announce that Nick Mammel has been named as the 10th head coach in Oakland Hockey history.

“We are pleased to have Nick join our Oakland Hockey family” Hagood stated. “We actually recruited Mammel to play here at Oakland years back, and to have him now as our head coach is exciting. We are looking forward to Nick helping us become successful”

Mammel comes to Oakland after serving as head coach of the El Paso Rhinos (NA3HL) where he went 54-25-1-2. His team won the South Division Championship with the youngest team in the division and third youngest team in the league. Mammel had 12 of his players advance to skate with NAHL programs, and also had five of his players skate with the El Paso NAHL team.

“I’m very excited to be at Oakland” Mammel said. “When I was coming through as a skater and player Oakland was a place where everyone wanted to be, it was really respected and that is what I’m going to lean on in bringing it back to that.”

Being back home where his family and roots have been make becoming the head coach at Oakland the prefect fit. “I think getting back to being at home.” Mammel stated as one of the reasons he’s excited to be at Oakland.

“My family is from the area and my wife went to school at Oakland, so being able to build something in my backyard, putting my name on it, and being proud of it, and being a proud kid who came from Michigan hockey and just expanding the sport in my hometown and getting back to those deeply rooted traditions of excellence that Oakland is from education to athletics.” Mammel stated .”

The short term vision for Mammel involves improving recruiting and getting back to the traditions of winning that Oakland was known for “Getting back to heavily recruiting the NA3, which is where I came from. There is a lot of excellent players there that sometimes get overshadowed or undervalued. (I’ll be) using the junior connections of where I came from to build a brand.”

He knows the level of hockey talent in the area is something Oakland needs to recruit well. “There is so much talent in the Metro Detroit area alone, so lets become a hotbed for there” Mammel added.

Before taking over in El Paso, Mammel served as the Varsity Hockey Assistant Coach with Midland High School for five seasons.

As a player he played for the Nashville Junior Predators (NA3HL) and Central Michigan (ACHA DII).
