GOJHL PROSPECTS GAME - SARNIA
JANUARY 19 - The Sarnia Legionnaires played host to 450 excited fans and scouts who gathered to watch top hockey players from the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League [GOJHL] participate in the annual Prospects Game.
Teams made up of the best players from the Western / Midwestern division [Team White] took on a team from the Golden Horseshoe / Midwestern division [Team Red]. Both sides did not disappoint.
Chatham Maroons forward Evan Stibbard kicked off scoring for team White just two minutes into the game. This sparked team White as they continued to pressure team Red the entire first period. Waterloo Siskins Eric Lekun, London Nationals forward Joel Martinelli, Brett Catto from the Listowel Cyclones and Bobby Cook from the St. Thomas Stars all added goals for team West heading into the second period.
Fans were kept in their seats during the first intermission. Head-to-head races around the ice resulted in team white awarded one goal for winning three out of the five races. Team Red's McKenzie McAvoy from the Welland Jr. Canadians had the overall fastest time at 13.29 seconds and thus team Red was awarded their first goal of the game.
The second period started the way the first period ended for team White. Matt Abercrombie from Sarnia fired a shot passed Kitchener Dutchman goalie Jordan Bowes just 42 seconds into the period. But this sparked team Red as Niagara Falls Canucks forward Cam McLean scored the lone unassisted goal of the game, his shot beating St. Mary's Lincolns goaltender Jesse Raymond. The Fort Erie Meteors, Nik Terpak added another goal for team Red, ending the period with the score standing at 7-3 for team White.
Second intermission again saw prime talent showcased from around the league. Another goal was added for team Red when host team player, Tyler Peters, posted the hardest shot, an outstanding 97 mph.
Team White continued its dominance in the third period when London's Stephen Sanza and Chatham's forward Evan Stibbard each scored. At the end of regulation time, with the score set at 9-4 a breakaway relay gave both teams an opportunity to add to the score sheet. Team Red scored four times and team White three, the final score of the game being 12 - 8 for team White.
The OHA High Performance award went to Andrew Darrigo from the Waterloo Siskins. First Star of the game was awarded to Abercrombie [one goal, one assist] Second star of the game was Catto [one goal, one assist] and third star was Port Colborne Pirates goaltender Nicholas Gigone who stopped 23 of 29 shots on net.
