Cambridge outlasts Waterloo, 3-2

The Cambridge Winter Hawks gutted out a close 3-2 win against the Waterloo Siskins.

Each team kept the other at bay throughout the game, and Matt MacKay secured the win for Cambridge with a goal in the second period.

Waterloo's power play was ineffective against the Winter Hawks' penalty kill, which allowed one goal while shorthanded.

Cambridge was led by MacKay, who registered one goal and one assist. MacKay scored short handed 19:13 into the second period to make the score 3-2 Cambridge. A high sticking call on Kyle Heitzner put the Winter Hawks on the penalty kill. Matt Steen picked up the assist.

Cambridge forced the Siskins goalie Mitchell Datz to work between the pipes, taking 36 shots.

Zack Hedley also scored for Cambridge. In addition, Cambridge received assists from Matt Harding, Chris Poletek, and Jake Beard, who each chipped in one.

The Winter Hawks were unable to stop Waterloo from sending pucks towards the net, and the Siskins eventually piled up 40 shots on goal.

Waterloo was led by Nate Schnarr, who racked up one goal and one assist. Schnarr scored 2:04 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Cambridge. Brett Wilson provided the assist. Waterloo also got a goal from Thomas Haffner as well. Other players who recorded assists for Waterloo were Nick Hirst, who had two.

Scott Patton rejected 38 shots on goal for Cambridge. The Winter Hawks incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors. Cambridge ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Cameron Chubb was ejected from the game. Datz recorded 33 saves for the Siskins. Waterloo incurred four minutes in penalty time with two minors.
