League Announces New Schedule; Playoff Format

The Golden State Collegiate Baseball League (GSCBL) announced today that it will play 42 league games starting during the 2016 season. In previous years, the league has played anywhere from 24 to 32 games; however the GSCBL Commision Board and Board of Directors decided it would be better to increase games among league members.

GSCBL Co-Owner Marc Caviglia had this to say about the change: "In the past, we've played about 50 percent league games and 50 percent non-league games. By increasing the amount of league games it fosters competitive rivalries and makes each game more meaningful."

League franchises are still encouraged to play anywhere from 6-8 non-league games against other summer collegiate baseball programs to bring the overall game total to roughly 50 games per franchise.

The GSCBL also announced that they will bring back playoffs for the 2016 season and beyond. After having playoffs in 2013 and 2014 the league decided against them in 2015, however they will be back again this season. In the past, the league has done a 4-team double elimination tournament but a new format is in place moving forward.

The team with the best overall record during the 42-game regular season automatically qualifies for the best-of-3 championship while the 2nd and 3rd place teams will play in a single elimination game to open up the playoffs. The winner of that game will then play the 1st place team in best-of-3 championship. The playoffs will take place on July 29-July 31 at Canada Junior College's first class facility in Redwood City, CA.

Caviglia had to say this when asked about the playoffs: "We are excited to bring back the playoffs in 2016 and beyond. We feel that this new format is simplistic and realy emphasizes the importance of the regular season. If you grind it out for 42 league games and are the best team, you should be rewarded. By going straight to the championship you've got the edge over the other two teams that have to win the play-in game. It should be an exciting finish in late July!"

The GSCBL has eight franchises among three different states. The league has six teams in Northern California, one team in Reno, Nevada and another in Klamath Falls, Oregon. Every team in the league will play each other in six league games to make the 42 total.

In just its fourth season as a league the GSCBL continues to make great strides. "We are excited for the future of the GSCBL and feel that through time it will become the premier summer collegiate baseball league on the West Coast."  Caviglia said.
