EXCERPT:
After playing for Corona High School in Corona, California, during the spring, Hobbs said he was happy with the way his summer in Fairbanks turned out.
“I thought it went pretty well,” he said. “I accomplished everything that I wanted to physically, mechanically and mentally. Hopefully I can take this experience and roll with it during college ball.”
The Seals scored two runs off Hobbs in the eighth to take a 5-1 lead before adding an insurance run in the ninth.
He allowed three runs on four hits and struck out five in four innings of work.
Tyler Heinrichs, of Tulane University, led the Goldpanners at the plate with a 3 for 4 performance.
Fresno State’s JT Arruda and Griffin Barnes, of Grand Canyon University, both recorded base hits in defeat.
Although the Goldpanners would have liked to leave Alaska with a victory, Berryhill said the players will instead leave with new lifelong friends.
“It’s unbelievable how well we came together,” he said. “Right at the beginning of the season, it was an instant friendship between everybody. It’s going to be hard to leave these guys but we’ll all be friends for the rest of our lives.”
