Playoff Breakdown
Gents,
Playoff season is the most exciting time of year for beer league hacks such as oureselves. While it is exciting, It can sometimes also be pretty confusing. I mean, its not quantum physics or accounting... but I can see how our playoff format can be a little confusing. So let me break it down for you.
There are 3 rounds in the playoffs. Quarters, Semis, and Finals. There are 6 teams per division, and every team makes the playoffs.
QUARTERS
Ther quarters consist of a 1 game series between the 3rd seed and the 6th seed, and the 4th and 5th seeds. The 1st and 2nd seeds automatically make it to the Semis, so they will play exhibition games this week against the 1st and 2nd seeds from the other divisions. Should the playoff game be tied at the end of regulation, the teams will go into a 5 minute (run time) overtime. If no winner is determined from the overtime, we will have a 3 player shootout to determine a winner.
SEMIS
The semis are a 2 game series between the 4 remaining teams in each division. To clarify, the winners from the previous week will play the 1st and 2nd seeds which played the exhibition games during the quarter final week. This round is reseeded so that the 1st place team will play the lowest remaining seed.
Because this is a 2 game series, it is very possible to remain tied at the end of game 2. This would happen if team A beats team B in regulation in game 1 and team B beats team A in reguation in game 2. This means that both team A and team B would have 2 points (win=2 points, loss=0 points, OT/Shootout loss=1 point). To determine a winner to advance to the final round, a 5 minute overtime will be played (run-time). If still there is no winner, a 3 player shootout will decide the winner of the 2 game series.
FINALS
Just like the semis, the finals consist of a 2 game series between the 2 remaining teams. All rules that apply in the Semis, also apply in the Finals.
Please be sure to inform team mates of the playoff format to avoid confusion. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me. Also, please check out the playoff primer articles that will be released this week.
Cheers fellas,
Good luck in the playoffs.
Matt Grossi
