WEEK 3 SUMMER POWER RANKINGS
The Summer season is finally underway. Thanks to all returning players for choosing the GFHL again this season. To all new players, you've made a smart decision. Without further ado, here is the first Power Rankings article of the season. For those new to the league, you can expect an update every couple of weeks. Please stop by if you see us at the arena and let us know what you think.
1. GLORY BOYS
After 3 weeks of hockey, not a person in the league can keep the Glory Boys from topping out the power rankings. They are averaging 8 goals per game and they're not exactly weak along the blue line. Liam Kerrins and G Cianflocca lead the league in points with a combined 21 points in 3 games. In fact, 4 of the top 6 point leaders in the GFHL play for the Glory Boys. This team is scary good.
2. THE JETS
With a 2-1 record, the Jets sit in 2nd in the GFHL. While their offense is almost as good as the previously mentioned Glory Boys, the Jets just cant seem to keep the puck out of the net. Anthony Fera has played well, but an abundance of shots has the Jets allowing 13 goals in 3 games. Not exactly a shut down defense. Lee Panchuck and Mike Tarasco have been the Jets saving grace this season. If theyre going to battle the Glory Boys for the cup this season, the Jets are going to need to see some more production from Journeymen Mike Spags and Anthony Gasbarre.
3. THE BURNERS
Mike Covello's Burners have been a quiet surprise this season. Allowing only 8 goals against all season, the Burners have one of the stronger defensive cores in the GFHL. Alex Moretti and Vince Fabiano have put enough pucks in the net this season to secure two wins this season. The burners are yet to be tested though. Could a lack of competition have helped the Burners climb so high in this weeks power rankings? Probably.
4. THE CHIZZLERS
The Chizz. Perennially mediocre. Defenseman Matt Speck and Goaltender Chris Duggan have made up the only brightspots on the team this season. Captain Vinny Pazz does a good job rallying the boys, but his lack of consistency is hurting the team. Forward Marco Grossi is in a slump and theres no signs of him climbing out. This team is in trouble.
5. THE NIGHTHAWKS
The GFHLs newest team has started a little slow this season. Although a tough schedule does play into the 1-2 record, this team needs to step up and start winning hockey games. The loss to the burners is a game the Nighthawks let slide. Forward Mike Dangelo has averaged a goal a game, but Captain Anthony Pinchera needs to rally the team and start getting some production from the other forwards. 2.6 goals for per game simply doesn't cut it in the GFHL.
6. THE REAPERS
A rough start for the Reapers ended in week 3 with a huge win against the 3rd ranked Burners. Forward Nick Hodgson owns 6 of the Reapers 7 goals on the season. While the forwards need to step up and score more goals, the Reapers problems don't stop there. The Reapers have allowed 14 goals in 3 games this season. The bright side; 9 of those goals came at the hands of the 2nd ranked Jets.
7. THE MAJORS
Cody Hurst and the Majors have to be disappointed with a lack of production this season. Starting out 3-0 is a tough way to begin the Summer season, but at least the Majors got some of the better teams out of the way. Dan Conte has been mediocre, and goalie Mitch Gane is finally back in net after injuring his shoulder last season.
8. THE PREDATORS
The predators. Dont let their single win this season fool you. The team has potential to be one of the better teams in the league this season. The problem is they play as individuals and not as a team. Captain Nick Grossi needs to settle down the players and get back to basics. D-man Peter Zeno has been pretty solid, but overall, the team needs to get better if they're going to add to their win column this season.
Dont like where your team stands in the power rankings this week? Win some more games and check back here in a few weeks.
Cheers,
Matt
