A 6-1 LOSS AND ANOTHER RAIN POSTPONEMENT
By Hannah Theriault
CINCINNATI – On Tuesday night the Hamilton Joes faced the Cincinnati Steam at Xavier University in a pair of seven-inning games after Sunday night’s rainout. In game one the Joes struggled offensively and lost 6-1 to the Steam. In game two the Joes were up 13-1 when the game was cut short in the bottom of the fourth due to a rain postponement.
GAME 1:
With two outs in the bottom of the first Christopher Hoffmann roped one to left center field, grabbing a stand up double, but was ultimately left stranded.
Gavin Faulkner got the start on the hill for the Joes, making his Joes’ debut. The Steam took an early lead after four batters were walked. A grand slam then put their lead at 5-0. The Joes had put themselves in a hole early in the game.
In the bottom of the second, after Faulkner secured the first two outs via strikeouts, Maddox Pennington came into the game for the Joes. Pennington finished off the inning with another strikeout.
The Joes finally got on the board in the top of the third when Max Davenport scored on a sac fly from Carter Rust, making it a 5-1 game.
In the bottom of the third the Steam put their lead back at five runs after a solo home run moved the score to 6-1.
Jacob Flaherty went to the mound for the Joes in the bottom of the fifth. He got the Joes out of the inning without allowing a run.
However, the Joes could not come back from the deficit and fell to the Steam 6-1.
GAME 2:
The Joes struck early in game two when Liam McFadden-Ackman hit an RBI single that scored AJ Swader, to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.
Joey Valentine was the first pitcher out of the pen for the Joes in game two and did not allow a hit in the inning.
Parker McDonald crossed the plate on a wild pitch in the top of the second and doubled the Joes’ lead. That wasn’t enough for the Joes though, Davenport hit an RBI single that would score Matthew Strand. Stephen Stigler followed that up with an RBI single of his own, which scored Davenport. Stigler then came home on another RBI single, this time from Swader. The next two runs across were Swader and McFadden-Ackman when Grant Miller and then McDonald walked with the bases loaded, which upped the Joes’ lead to 7-0. The tables had certainly turned in game two.
In the top of the third Davenport crossed home on a balk. Stigler then came across on an RBI single from Hoffmann. Hoffmann would later score on an RBI double from Rust. McDonald then hit an RBI fielder’s choice that scored McFadden-Ackman and increased the difference to 11-0.
The Steam grabbed their first run of the game in the bottom of the third on an RBI single, cutting the Joes’ lead to 11-1.
In the top of the fourth the Joes tacked on two more runs on an RBI double from Rust. Stigler and Hoffmann crossed the plate to put the score at 13-1.
The Joes’ impressive game was cut short due to some intense rain. The game will be finished on Friday the 16th at 5:05 p.m. prior to the regularly scheduled 7:05 game at Foundation Field in Hamilton, Ohio.
The Joes will return to the field on Wednesday, June 14 in Xenia, Ohio to face the Xenia Scouts at 5:05 p.m to continue the rainout from June 6 and to play the regularly scheduled 7:05 game.
