Sag Harbor 11, Riverhead 9

For the second straight game, the Sag Harbor Whalers used a big inning to lift themselves to a victory on the road. The Whalers scored eight runs in the top of the sixth inning and the momentum from that inning was enough to overcome a Riverhead comeback and take an 11-9 victory in Calverton.

Sag Harbor scored two runs in the top of the second, but Riverhead cut the score to 2-1 in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI fielder's choice by Asher Lee-Tyson (Princeton).

The Whalers big rally in the sixth began when Jack Thompson (Georgia State) drove in his 13th RBI on the season with a double. Shane Melbrod (Xavier) followed with an RBI single and Philip Maldari (Emory) followed with one of the his own that made the score 5-1. Four Riverhead errors in the inning would be responsible for the remaining runs and when it was over, Sag Harbor found themselves up by nine runs.

Riverhead would answer in the bottom half of the inning on two RBI doubles from the Princeton Tiger connection of Lee-Tyson and Joseph Flynn to cut the score in half at 10-5.

The Tomcats would continue to inch closer in the seventh, with the bases loaded and nobody out, Tim DeGraw (Yale) walked to bring the tying run to the plate. Mike Flynn (St. Rose) brought in a run on a fielder's choice and Kiambu Fentress (Vanderbilt) singled to cut Sag Harbor's lead to 10-8.

Whalers Head Coach Nathan Lawrence would go to his bullpen and call upon Kendall Pomeroy (UMass Lowell) to get the final out of the inning. Luke DeVenney (Eastern Michigan) hit a lined shot that could have tied the game, but the first basemen Thompson made an incredible jumping catch to keep the Whalers ahead.

Sag Harbor would get another run in the eighth on a Manny Ramirez Jr. (San Francisco) RBI single and the Whalers headed to the bottom of the ninth with a three run lead. Chris Sheehan (Wofford) who was called on for the save allowed an unearned run in the ninth, but got the final three outs to give Sag Harbor their second straight win on the road.

Riverhead after starting the season 9-0-1 have now lost four straight.

Montauk 4, Westhampton 3

The Montauk Mustangs snapped the Westhampton Aviators eight game unbeaten streak by defeating them at Montauk Public School for the second time in 2016 on Saturday. Montauk down 3-1 in the bottom of the sixth, rallied for two runs and a run in seventh to win 4-3.

Coach Mitchell Feller's Mustangs have won their last four straight game and are at .500 for the season with a record of 9-9.

Montauk got an early run in the first inning when Aviators starter Casey Sutherland (Davidson) walked the Mustangs Billy McLean (Queens) with the bases loaded giving Montauk the early advantage.

Westhampton would get two runs in the fourth inning. Aaron Ping (San Francisco) hit a solo shot for his league leading sixth homerun of the season to tie the game. The Aviators would have two men on base when Roman Baisa (San Francisco) had a single to give Westhampton the lead. However, a strong throw by Montauk 3B Zachary Pearson (William & Mary) to the plate prevented another run from scoring.

Jacob Jaye (VMI) added another run in the Westhampton column in the fifth on a sacrifice fly that brought in VMI teammate Matt Dunleavy to make the score 3-1 in favor of Westhampton.

Montauk would tie the game in the sixth, first on a Rob Vani (Adelphi) single and then another walk to McLean with the bases loaded. The Mustangs would get the go-ahead run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly from Myles Zillinsky (Oakland).

The Aviators had the tying run in scoring position in the ninth, but former Aviator Jamie Galazin (St. John's) got Jaye to ground out to the shortstop giving the Mustangs a come from behind win. Galazin picked up his third save of the summer, while finishing the day 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored against his former team.

Westhampton's Dunleavy finished the game 3-for-3 and extended his hitting streak to nine games dating back to June 13th. Dunleavy currently leads the HCBL in batting average, hitting .429 this summer for the Aviators.

Game 1: Shelter Island 6, North Fork 3

Game 2: North Fork 9, Shelter Island 6

The Bucks and Ospreys split a doubleheader at Cochran Park on Saturday Night. Shelter Island ended up winning the first game behind a three hit game from Christian Molfetta (Stanford). North Fork took the nightcap behind three RBI from Dan Schock (Sacred Heart) as the Ospreys fended off a late Bucks comeback for a 9-6 win.

In the first game, Molfetta hit a solo homerun for his first of the season, giving the Bucks the early edge in the second inning. North Fork answered back in the bottom half of the inning on a Rodrigo Duluc (Rice) RBI single tying the score. Max Smith (UNLV) would give the Ospreys a 2-1 lead on an RBI double in the bottom of the third.

The Bucks took the lead back in the fifth when Dan Hetzel (New Mexico State) hit a two-run homerun off Anthony Catinella (Molloy) making the score 3-2 in favor of Shelter Island. The Bucks got another homerun in the sixth on the first homerun of the season from Nick Campana (Hartford) which was a solo  shot. Shelter Island would get insurance runs on RBI singles from Molfetta and Campana.

Smith homered in the bottom of the seventh, but the Ospreys could not mount a comeback as Ben Schragger (Rice) saved the game for starter Ian Burns (Columbia) to get the Bucks a win.

In the second game, the Bucks had a 2-0 lead in the first innings, but North Fork rallied for three runs to have a 3-2 lead when the inning was over. North Fork would have a big inning in the fifth scoring five runs to take what the Ospreys home crowd assumed was a safe six run lead.

But in the sixth inning, Molfetta drove in two run on a single, followed two batters later by Justin Etts (NJIT) knocking in a run on a single. Matt Sinatro (San Francisco) drove home Molfetta on an RBI double and the Bucks were only down by two runs.

But in the bottom half of the inning, Hayden Rappoport's (Dartmouth) solo homerun gave the Ospreys a three run lead and that was enough for Brandon Alberto (NYIT) as he got the save for North Fork in the seventh. The victory by the Ospreys put North Fork one point behind Westhampton for first place in the HCBL standings.

North Fork starter Greg Marino (Stony Brook) picked up the win, going five innings, allowing two runs on four hits with six strikeouts and a walk. Molfetta had four hits for the Bucks in the doubleheader with four RBI.
