6/24 Recap: Whalers Go Unbeaten in Doubleheader with Bucks
Game 1: Sag Harbor 4, Shelter Island 3
Game 2: Sag Harbor 2, Shelter Island 2 (8 Innings)
The Sag Harbor Whalers and Shelter Island Bucks played a pair of exciting games at Fiske Field in Shelter Island on a Sunday.
The Whalers went out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first of Game 1 on a home run by Jason Allbery (Creighton).
Shelter Island would tie the score at 2-2 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second on a John Behrends (Belmont) RBI groundout and a Mike Casaleggio (Marist) RBI single.
The Bucks went ahead in the bottom of the third on an RBI groundout from Justin Cherry (Rhode Island) that scored Andrew DuPont (St. John’s).
Sag Harbor would answer back in the following half inning when newcomer Daniel Alvarez Jr. (Pittsburgh) tied the game on an RBI single. The Whalers would take the lead in the top of the sixth on a wild pitch that scored Sam Cachola (California).
The Bucks would put the tying run on in the bottom of the seventh but Michael Marzonie (Boston College) got the final out to preserve the Game 1 win. Marzonie went the distance getting his first win of the season.
Both teams would play to a 2-2 eight-inning tie in the nightcap of the doubleheader.
Alvarez Jr. would get his second RBI of the doubleheader on a single that scored Nick Thornquist (McLennan CC) in the top of the fourth putting the Whalers ahead 1-0.
Jake MacKenzie (Fordham) tied the score in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI double for the Bucks.
No team could score a run for the next three innings as the game went into the eighth and final inning.
Allbery would break the tie in the top of the eighth on a sacrifice fly giving the Whalers a 2-1 lead. Shelter Island would get a sacrifice fly of their own from Casaleggio.
However, despite the Bucks having the winning run in scoring position, Sag Harbor would prevent the Bucks from splitting the doubleheader. The teams would settle with the tie at the end of the game.
Sag Harbor’s Thornquist had a hit in both games of the doubleheader extending his current hitting streak to seven games. The HCBL leader in batting average had his total at an amazing .547 following the end of Game 2.
Riverhead 13, Southampton 2 (8 Innings)
The Riverhead Tomcats extended the Southampton Breakers winless streak to nine games on Sunday with a 13-2 eight-inning win at Southampton High School on Sunday.
Miles Kelly (Rutgers) went 2-for-4 for Riverhead with a home run and 4 RBI.
Riverhead had control of the game from the start scoring six runs in the top of the first inning. The Tomcats would score two runs in the fourth and get a run in the fifth.
A four-run rally in the top of the eighth put Riverhead up by eleven runs. Mike Pirrotta (Wagner) pitched a scoreless eighth for the Tomcats giving Riverhead a mercy rule win.
Alex Baratta (Binghamton) had two hits in the game for the Tomcats raising his average to .404. The Binghamton Bearcat currently has a six-game hitting streak.
Cam Post (Oakland) was responsible for both Breakers runs with two RBI.
Riverhead (9-5-3) win the win extends their current unbeaten streak to five games.
North Fork 3, Westhampton 1 (8 Innings)
The North Fork Ospreys picked up big home win at Cochran Park on Sunday Night. North Fork defeated the second-place Westhampton Aviators by a final score of 3-1.
The Ospreys scored three runs in the bottom of the third on RBI’s from Tyler White (Hofstra), Tyrese Clayborne (Lamar) and Joe Mercadante (LIU Brooklyn).
It was all the run support that Austin Smith (Lamar) needed. The Huffman, Texas righthander went six innings only allowing an unearned run on six hits. Smith struck out four Westhampton hitters while allowing just one walk.
David Wylie (St. Mary’s (CA) earned his third save of the season shutting out Westhampton in the top of the ninth.
Clayborne went 3-for-4 for North Fork while he got his seventh stolen base of the season in the win.
Westhampton’s Curtis Robison (Penn State) accounted for the Aviators only run in the sixth on a solo homer. It was Robison’s second straight game with a home run with both games being against the Ospreys.
The game ended in the bottom of the eighth inning due to rain and lightning at Cochran Park.
North Fork (7-10-2) is currently in a three-way tie with Sag Harbor (7-7-2) and Shelter Island (7-9-2) for the last two playoff spots in the HCBL.
