HCBL history was made in the nightcap of a doubleheader between the Southampton Breakers and Shelter Island Bucks. Henry Escandon (Catholic U), Connor Schlidt (St. Joseph’s-LI), and Jacob Pedersen (Adelphi) combined for a no-hitter for the Breakers in a 7-1 win of Shelter Island.
The no-hitter was the eighth in the history of the Hamptons Collegiate Baseball League. It was the first no-hitter thrown in the HCBL since Bobby Vath (NYIT) of Riverhead threw one against the Bucks in 2019. It was also the second no-hitter in Breakers franchise history after Brett Moore (Mount St. Mary’s) threw the first one for the Breakers in 2009 against North Fork.
The Breakers took a 3-0 lead in the second inning. John Vitucci (Seton Hall) drove in two runs on a single and then Nick Ungania (Binghamton) had an RBI single to make the score 3-0 in favor of Southampton.
The Breakers added additional runs in the third and fourth innings. JJ Romatzick (Hartford) drove in a run in the third on a double and then in the fourth inning, Ungania would score from third base on a wild pitch putting Southampton ahead 5-0.
Southampton would take a 6-0 when Vitucci got his third RBI of the game on a single to left field.
Escandon who started the game for the Breakers went the minimum four innings needed for a win in a doubleheader game while not allowing a hit. The Breakers would turn it to the bullpen for the final three innings.
Schlidt who come on in the bottom of the fifth worked around two walks to throw a scoreless inning. Schlidt would face trouble in the sixth loading the bases on three straight walks with one out. After getting the second out in the sixth, Schlidt would walk Willson Dunn (Hope International) as the Bucks would score their first run of the game as Southampton would make a pitching change.
Pedersen who already had two saves in the season for the Breakers was called on for the rare save opportunity up by five with the bases loaded. Pedersen would get Rob Geisler (UMass Lowell) to ground out to third to preserve the no-hit bid into the seventh.
Southampton would score another run in the seventh on Vitucci’s fourth RBI of the game on a sacrifice fly as the Breakers lead 7-1 as Pedersen returned to the mound for the bottom of the seventh.
Pedersen would retire the Bucks 1-2-3 in the bottom of the seventh to give the Breakers their second no-hitter in franchise history.
It is the second combined no-hitter in the history of the HCBL. Brendan Butler (Fairleigh Dickinson), Anthony Gatto (UMBC), and John Maloney (High Point) of the Center Moriches Battlecats combined for the first one against the Bucks back on June 5, 2012.
