7/9 Recap: Westhampton Sweeps Southampton in Doubleheader
Game 1: Westhampton 4, Southampton 1
Game 2: Westhampton 8, Southampton 6
The Westhampton Aviators swept a doubleheader with the Southampton Breakers on Sunday at Aviator Field winning both games by final scores of 4-1 and 8-6.
The Aviators took the first game scoring four runs in the bottom of the third highlighted by a three-run home run by Ethan Guerra (Paris JC) which was his fourth home run of the season.
Jake DesLauriers (Hofstra) pitched a seven-inning complete game allowing a run on four hits with five strikeouts and two walks. DesLauriers improved his record to 3-0 in all three starts he’s had this season.
In the second game, Southampton took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on an RBI single by John Vitucci (Seton Hall). The Breakers would get another run in the third inning on an RBI single from Kenneth Franquiz (New Haven) to lead 2-0.
The Aviators would take the lead in the bottom of the third. Following back-to-back walks to Tyler Smith (Saint Peter’s) and Jack Halloran (Emory), Sean Keys (Bucknell) drove in Smith to score on an RBI single putting Westhampton on the scoreboard. Zachary Leiderman (Skidmore) would then give Westhampton the lead on a two-run single for a 3-2 Aviator lead.
Southampton would get back the lead in the top of the fourth scoring three runs on an RBI single from Martin Marintchev (Renssealer Polytechnic Inst.), a bases loaded walk to Tyler Burke (William & Mary), and a JJ Romatzick (Hartford) sacrifice fly to put the Breakers up 5-3.
The Breakers would get an additional run in the top of the fifth on a Mitchel Johnson (Catholic U) RBI single but they would leave the bases loaded preventing a big inning for Southampton.
In the bottom of the sixth, Westhampton put two on with nobody out for Keys as he hit his league-leading seventh home run of the season that tied the game at 6-6. The Aviators then would take the lead with two outs in the inning on RBI from Guerra and Zev Moore (MIT).
Luke Mistone (Cal St. Fullerton) pitched a scoreless seventh giving Westhampton the sweep. Mistone went 3.1 innings of relief striking out seven while walking two.
Game 1: South Shore 9, Shelter Island 0
Game 2: Shelter Island 7, South Shore 5
The Shelter Island Bucks and South Shore Clippers split a doubleheader at Bellport High School on Sunday.
Game 1 saw the Clippers shut out the Bucks by a final score of 9-0. Danny Tiedemann (Marywood) pitched six shutout innings allowing three hits with three strikeouts and two walks.
Luke Filippi (Albany) and Matthew Tempone (UMass Dartmouth) had a pair of RBI for the Clippers in the Game 1 win.
The second game saw the Bucks take an early 1-0 lead on an RBI groundout by Luke Nomura (Fairfield) in the first inning that scored Conor Kiely (Stonehill).
South Shore would rally for five runs in the bottom of the second highlighted by a double with the bases loaded and two out by Phil Krpata (St. Joseph’s-LI) that gave South Shore the lead. Ryan Ferremi (Albany) would bring in Krpata to score on an RBI double for the fifth run in the second.
Shelter Island would tie the score in the top of the fifth scoring four runs. Kiely would drive in the first run on an RBI single and then would come in to score on an error. Cooper Donlin (Oakland) would bring the Bucks to within a run with an RBI single and then Izaiah Walker (Southern Connecticut St.) would walk with the bases loaded tying the game at 5-5.
Walker would again come up to the plate with the bases loaded in the top of the seventh and again he would take a walk and this time it would give the Bucks the lead. Willson Dunn (Hope International) added an insurance run for Shelter Island on a sacrifice fly.
In the bottom of the seventh, South Shore had the tying run at the plate with one out. Peter DeVito (St. Thomas Aquinas) ripped a line drive that was snagged by Mason Kulpa (UMass) at first base who ended the game with an unassisted double play for the win.
Jacob Nolan (Endicott) pitched four shutout innings of relief only allowing one hit to earn the win. Jaylen Cruz (Southern Connecticut St.) pitched the seventh for Shelter Island and earned his first save of the season.
Sag Harbor 9, North Fork 4
The Sag Harbor Whalers improved to 12-9 on the season beating the North Fork Ospreys by a score of 9-4 on Sunday at Mashashimuet Park.
North Fork took an early 2-0 lead in the first two innings on an RBI single from Christian Fagnant (Amherst) in the first and an RBI infield single in the second by Ty Acker (George Washington).
The Whalers would tie the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the second on a two-run home run by Lucas Pierce (Rhode Island College) for his first home run of the season.
North Fork would regain the lead in the top of the third on an error by Sag Harbor that resulted in a pair of Osprey runs.
In the bottom of the fifth, Sag Harbor loaded the bases with two out when Milo Suarez (Dartmouth) walked to put the Whalers within a run. Ospreys starting pitcher Zach Fortuna (UMass Lowell) would then settle down and get Gabe Caso (Northampton CC) to ground a comebacker to him for the 1-2 fielder’s choice at home ending the threat.
Sag Harbor would get the lead in the sixth taking advantage of three North Fork errors to score five runs giving the Whalers an 8-4 lead.
The Whalers would get an additional run in the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Caso to make the score 9-4. Patrick Teehan (Montclair St.) retired the Ospreys 1-2-3 in the top of the ninth giving Sag Harbor the win.
Cole Forcellina (Connecticut-Avery Point) who pitched the sixth and seventh innings for Sag Harbor earned the win improving his record to 2-0.
