6/15 Recap: Ospreys Walk-Off Against Westhampton

North Fork 5, Westhampton 4

 

The North Fork Ospreys were walk-off winners against the Westhampton Aviators on Saturday Night at Cochran Park winning by a final score of 5-4.

 

North Fork would take an early 1-0 lead on the bottom of the first on an RBI double hit by Joseph Dwyer (SUNY Oneonta). Dwyer would then do the same thing in the third when he hit on RBI double to left field doubling the lead to 2-0.

 

North Fork would add another run in the bottom of the fourth on a Westhampton error making the score 3-0 in favor of the Ospreys.

 

Westhampton would get on the scoreboard when a North Fork error in the top of the fifth resulted in an Aviator run crossing the plate.

 

The Aviators would rally to take the lead in the top of the seventh. The Aviators got their first run of the inning on a wild pitch that scored Luca PiPia (Ithaca). Jakob Chavez (Paradise Valley CC) would then tie the score at 3-3 on an RBI single. Third-year Aviator Tyler Smith (St. Peter’s) would come through with two out with a single driving in the go-ahead run for Westhampton as they took a 4-3 lead.

 

The Ospreys would tie the score in the bottom of the eighth on a sacrifice fly hit by the DH Jason Hanson (UC Davis) making the score 4-4.

 

In the bottom of the ninth inning, North Fork had two men on and one out for Rocco Cimino (Pace) when a dropped third strike brought in Tyler DiRocco (Farmingdale St.) to score from third base giving North Fork their first win of the season.

 

North Fork starting pitcher Bobby Jellison (Salem St.) went 6.1 innings in his first start of the season and gave up three runs (two earned) on four hits with eight strikeouts and no walks. Second-year Osprey Aidan O’Keefe (Richmond) finished the night hitting 3-for-5 at the plate.


 

South Shore 7, Sag Harbor 6

 

The South Shore Clippers took their first win of the season against the Sag Harbor Whalers on Saturday at Mashashimuet Park.

 

Sag Harbor took an early 1-0 lead on an RBI fielder’s choice from Kuyper Lashutka (Denison). The Clippers would then take the lead in the bottom of the second on a two-run shot from Jake Acker (Wesleyan) making the score 2-1 in favor of South Shore.

 

The Whalers would rally in the top of the fourth bringing in three runs with the highlight being a two-run single from Matthew Dieguez (Fordham) that broke a 2-2 tie. Sag Harbor would score another run in the top of the fifth giving the Whalers a 5-2 lead.

 

South Shore would respond in the bottom of the fifth as Joe Sanguedolce (St. Joseph’s-Long Island) hit a two-run single putting the Clippers within a run and runners at the corners with two out. However, EJ Ettinger (New Haven) would line into a 5-5-3 double play to end the fifth inning.

 

Both teams would score a run in the sixth inning. Sag Harbor would get their run on a sacrifice fly from Declan Ryan (St. Anselm) while the Clippers scored their run when James Myler (Bryant) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. The score was 6-5 in favor of the Whalers going into the seventh inning.

 

In the bottom of the seventh Sanguedolce lead off the inning with a basehit. Erick Dunigan (Adelphi) followed with a ground-rule double putting the go-ahead runs in scoring position for South Shore. Acker would bring in the tying run to score on an RBI groundout. South Shore would then take the lead on sacrifice fly from James Eden (Adelphi) that scored Dunigan.

 

The South Shore bullpen would hold the lead as K.J. Lavoie (St. Rose) came on in the top of the eighth to stop a potential Sag Harbor rally. Lavoie would hold the Whalers scoreless in in the ninth to give the Clippers their first win of the 2024 season.

 

Bobby Molinaro (Adelphi) pitched 3.1 innings of relief for the Clippers earning the victory. Acker finished the day with three RBI for South Shore in addition to the home run in the second inning.


 

Shelter Island 6, Southampton 3

 

The Shelter Island Bucks beat the Southampton Breakers on Saturday at Southampton High School by a final score of 6-3.

 

The Bucks took control of the game early scoring three runs in the first and a run in the second to lead 4-0. Southampton would score a run in the bottom of the second cutting the score to 4-1 in favor of Shelter Island.

 

Shelter Island would score a run in the fifth and sixth innings to lead 6-1. The Breakers got close in the bottom of the seventh scoring two runs on a single by Ty Gilligan (Dominican) but Southampton would leave the tying run at the plate.

 

Shane Moriarty (Emerson) tossed two scoreless innings of relief to get the save in the Bucks first win on the season. Aiden Urbom (Dakota St.) earned the win only allowing a run on two hits in his start for the Bucks.


JD Stemhagen (Manhattan) was the offensive standout for the Bucks batting 4-for-6 with a pair of RBI and two runs scored.
