The Sag Harbor Whalers continued their offensive explosion, scoring 15+ runs for the second straight game with a 17-8 win over the Southampton Breakers on Wednesday at Southampton High School.

The Whalers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, thanks to a two-run single from Teddy Cashman (Lafayette). The Breakers responded in the bottom of the first with a Beau Durbin (Bradley) sacrifice fly, cutting the score to 2-1.

In the top of the third, Sag Harbor extended their lead by scoring three runs, which included Cashman's second RBI of the game with a one-out double that brought in Ryan Muskopf (George Mason). The game broke wide open in the top of the fourth when the Whalers scored ten runs on just three hits, taking a commanding 15-1 lead.

The Breakers made a valiant effort to extend the game in the bottom of the fifth, trying to avoid the ten-run mercy rule. Southampton managed to cut the score to 15-5 and loaded the bases with two outs. Tim Hennig (Binghamton) then ripped a three-run triple to right field, allowing the game to continue.

In the top of the seventh, the Whalers added two more runs on an error and a bases-loaded walk to Tucker Genovesi (St. Bonaventure), making the score 17-8, which would be the final score.

Will Darrell (Vassar) earned the win for Sag Harbor, pitching four innings and allowing one run on three hits, improving his record to 2-0. Lucas Pierce (Rhode Island College) had another standout performance, going 2-for-3 with three RBIs, giving him a total of 11 RBI in his last two games. The previous night in Peconic against the North Fork Ospreys, Pierce set a Hamptons League single-game record for RBIs with eight.

Tucker Genovesi also made history with five walks in the game, tying an HCBL single-game record originally set by 2017 Southampton Breaker Straton Podaras (Radford) against Sag Harbor in 2017.

These two teams will face each other again on Friday at Southampton High School, with the first pitch scheduled for 5:00 PM.
