Southampton 2, Shelter Island 1

The Southampton Breakers came out on the winning end in an exciting contest at Southampton High School on Wednesday beating the Shelter Island Bucks by a final score of 2-1 on a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the seventh by Tim Hennig (Binghamton).

It was an exciting duel on the mound between Bucks starter Logan Detty (Capital) and Breakers starter Joseph Wozny (Rochester Inst. of Tech). Both pitchers went six plus innings on the mound for their teams.

The Breakers would break a scoreless tie in the bottom of the second when Hennig hit a sacrifice fly that scored Ty Gilligan (Dominican) to give the Breakers a 1-0 lead.

Wozny had gone through the first five innings for the Breakers only allowing one hit. In the top of the sixth with one out, JD Stemhagen (Manhattan) hit a triple to right-center field putting the tying run in scoring position for the Bucks. Jack Lincoln (Bradley) would bring Stemhagen to score on a sacrifice fly tying the game.

In the bottom of the seventh with Detty back on the mound for Shelter Island he’d allow a leadoff double to Michael Vilardi (Queens). Shelter Island turned to Shane Moriarty (Emerson) to get out of the inning but he’d allow a single to Gilligan putting runners at the corners with nobody out.

After an intentional walk to Collin Quintano (Villanova), Moriarty would get a strikeout for the first out in the seventh when Hennig stepped up to the plate. On an 0-1 pitch Hennig would single to bring in Vilardi for the winning run for the Breakers.

Wozny went all seven innings for Southampton allowing a run on two hits with five strikeouts and two walks. Detty despite getting the loss finished his day with only allowing two runs on five hits with a strikeout.

Sag Harbor 12, Westhampton 2 (5 Innings)

The Sag Harbor Whalers defeated the Westhampton Aviators on the road by a final score of 12-2 in five innings on Wednesday.

Teddy Cashman (Lafayette) and Jack Gold (Pomona-Pitzer) each had home runs for the Whalers in the win. Cashman was 4-for-4 at the plate with three RBI while Gold was 3-for-4 with three RBI and three runs scored.

Andrew Basel (Northeastern) pitched four innings for the Whalers allowing two runs on three hits with four strikeouts and two walks to get his first win of the season.
