Breakers Hold Onto 2 Seed Behind Sliwkowski’s Masterful Pitching
Drew Sliwkowski (UMass) saved his best pitching performance for when the Southampton Breakers needed it most. Sliwkowski went five innings for the Breakers only allowing an unearned run on four hits in the Breakers' 7-1 win over the Shelter Island Bucks on Saturday.
Sliwkowski improved his record on the season to a perfect 5-0 and now has an ERA of 0.78 in 23 innings pitched for the Breakers in the 2025 season. The native of Kennebunkport, MA, has only allowed two earned runs for Southampton throughout the season with 29 strikeouts.
The Breakers took an early 2-0 lead, scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning on RBI singles from Luke Treese (Haverford) and Michael Vilardi (Queens).
Southampton would add another two runs in the third on sacrifice flies from Alex Apicella (Rowan College at Gloucester) and Luke Fisher (NYU) to lead 4-0.
Shelter Island would get on the board in the top of the fifth on an RBI single from Tommy Munch (Occidental) that cut the score to 4-1.
Southampton would put the game away, scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth, including an RBI single from Collin Quintano (Villanova), which was his 37th RBI of the season. Quintano’s RBI set a brand new Breakers single-season record in that category, passing the previous record of 36 set by both Robb Scott (Bucknell) and Jon Testani (UConn) in the 2012 season.
Giacomo Travaglia (Fordham) who came on in relief of Sliwkowski in the top of the sixth inning, pitched a scoreless seventh to earn his second save of the season.
Southampton at 17-14-2 and 36 points leads the South Shore Clippers at (17-15-1, 35 Points) by one point for the #2 seed in the HCBL playoff picture.
Shelter Island at 15-18 and 30 points trails the Sag Harbor Whalers (14-15-4, 32 Points) by two points for the last playoff spot in the HCBL.
Southampton travels on Sunday at 2 PM to play the Bucks at Fiske Field for the second game of their three-game series.
