The North Fork Ospreys made their 2013 home opener an exciting one for their fans in Peconic. Good pitching and well executed hitting gave the Ospreys their first win of 2013 against the defending HCBL champion Southampton Breakers with an 8-0 final.
The Ospreys got two runs in the bottom of the 2nd on a two RBI single from 2B Joe Salanitri (Queens) which gave North Fork a 2-0 lead. The next inning with the bases loaded and two out, RF John Rauseo laced a bases clearing double increasing the lead to 5-0.
North Fork scored three more runs in the seventh on an error along with an RBI fielder's choice from Salanitri and a Nick Heath (Northwestern State) RBI single. Salanitri finished the night going 2-for-5 with 3 RBI.
The Breakers has no answers for the Ospreys pitching as they combined for 12 strikeouts from the arms of Tyler Knight (Virginia Tech), Dalton Curtis (Lipscomb), David Deliz and Matt DAriano (Connecticut). Curtis picked up the win in relief for the Ospreys, after the starter Knight went four innings, allowing only two hits with six strikeouts and a walk.
In the defeat for Southampton, 2B David Leiderman (Hofstra) picked up three of the Breakers' four hits, going 3-for-4 on the evening. Kyle Zech (Stetson) provided the remaining hit on an infield single in the 7th.
