July 4: Shea Slam Punctuates Big Whaler Win
SAG HARBOR 9, SHELTER ISLAND 4
With its back against the wall, Sag Harbor put together one last rally at Shelter Island, scoring six runs in the top of the ninth inning to stun the host Bucks.
Trailing 4-3 heading into their last at-bat, the Whalers pulled ahead thanks to a Shelter Island error and then a passed ball. Dan Shea (Monmouth) padded the lead and then some, mashing a one-out grand slam, his first home run of the summer.
Sag Harbor’s Brandon Kruel (CW Post) landed the victory by going 2 2/3 innings, giving up one hit and one unearned run. Shelter Island was limited to just five hits on the day, two off the bat of Kevin Brantley (Hofstra). He and Jimmy Jack (Loyola Marymount) each drove in a pair of runs.
The July 4 game was played in honor of Army First Lieutenant Joseph Theinert of Sag Harbor, who was killed in Afghanistan in June 2010, and US Marine Corps Lance Corporal Jordan Haerter, who was killed in action in Ramadi, Iraq, in April 2008. Both were raised in Sag Harbor. As part of the salute, their mothers threw out the first pitch.
WESTHAMPTON 9, SOUTHAMPTON 5
JC Brandmaier (Dowling), Mitch Montaldo (Penn) and Dan Parisi (Dowling) all homered for Westhampton, which also got a lift from a 4-for-4 day by leadoff hitter Joey Havrilak (Akron).
The Aviators’ big inning was the third when they touched up Southampton starter Geraldo Gonzalez (LSU Eunice) for four runs. That’s when Brandmaier ripped a two-run homer, and Ryan Spaulding (Ball State) and Montaldo each drove in a run also.
Making his first start of the summer, Preston Brown (Mississippi State) picked up the victory, surrendering four runs (three earned) on four hits while striking out five. Drew Bryan (VMI) led the Breaker offense with a pair of hits.
