Each week, we’ll detail the stories of the players of the Sunflower Collegiate League. We’ll go in-depth on player careers, path to their respective team and what’s in store through the summer. Rose Hill Sluggers OF Hunter Gibson is our featured athlete this week. He hails from Oologah, Okla. and plays at Wichita State University. Gipson is currently third in the SCL in hitting, batting .429 with six home runs and 25 RBIs.

Q: With double-digit Shockers in the Sunflower Collegiate League, how has that helped your team build camaraderie after the shortened season in the spring?

“It’s definitely great. You’re familiar with everything around Wichita in staying close to play summer ball… It’s not like we’re having to go to a new part of the country and be with people you don’t know. It’s been good staying around town and get to work out in our own facilities as well.”

Q: As one of the league’s top hitters, what has been your assessment of your season thus far?

“I try not to look at [my average] and instead go to the plate with the same approach every single time I bat. I try to put numbers aside and let things fall where they fall. The more you look at stats, the more you try to do even more. You try to create things that maybe shouldn’t be created and instead I want to stay to my approach and do things I should do.”

Q: What has been the best part of playing summer ball and getting the chance to meet players you wouldn’t normally get to cross paths with in the spring?

“A lot of these guys [in Rose Hill] play close to the area. These are relationships and friendships that I’m going to have for the remainder of my time in Wichita. These guys are fun and they’re a blast to be around.”
