Monarchs secure 8-7 extra-inning win over Sluggin' Rebels in classic
Hutchinson, Kan. -- The Hutchinson Monarchs pulled out a classic extra-inning win by a score of 8-7 over the Newton Sluggin' Rebels last night (July 19) at Hobart-Detter Field in Hutchinson, Kan.
After the Sluggin' Rebels went scoreless in the top of the 11th, Sawyer Thornhill walked to lead off the bottom of the frame and went to third on a single by Hunter Autrey.
Cade Clemons was intentionally walked to load the bases, but Ryan Henderson then drew a walk to bring home Thornhill with the game-winning run.
The Monarchs had jumped out to an early 5-2 lead, but the Sluggin' Rebels came back with a run in the fourth and two more in the fifth to tie the score.
Thornhill anchored the Monarchs' attack with three hits, three runs and one RBI. Will Stark also had three hits and scored twice, while Lane Brewster tripled and drove in two runs for Hutchinson.
The Sluggin' Rebels got two hits apiece from Ethan Guerra, Conner Owens and Brandon Harper.
Kaden Wickersham came through on the mound for the Monarchs, pitching three spotless innings and allowing just one hit and striking out three to earn the win out of the bullpen.
Alex Gillig also shined in relief for the Sluggin' Rebels with three scoreless frames and a pair of strikeouts.
Tonight (July 20), Newton (23-15) will host Hutchinson (28-7) starting at 7 pm at Centennial Park.
