Cheney slips by Haysville in offensive slugfest, 10-9
The Cheney Diamond Dogs pulled out a 10-9 win in an offensive slugfest over the Haysville Aviators last night (July 20) at Plagens-Carpenter Park.
With the Diamond Dogs holding a 2-1 lead, things picked up when both teams exchanged four-run fifth innings.
Noah Brewer singled home two runs to finish the Diamond Dogs' fifth frame and increase the lead to 6-1.
But the Aviators answered right back when Tommy Davis singled home a run before Jayden Hill brought home two more runs with a single to again make it a one-run game at 6-5.
Cheney kept the offensive fireworks going, getting an RBI single from Cole Miears and then a double steal with Miears taking second base and Syring stealing home as part of a three-run sixth inning.
Davis then doubled home a run and Max Valdez had a run-scoring single to help the Aviators keep the pressure on and come within 9-7.
After the Twins tacked on a run in the eighth, the Aviators struck for two in the bottom of the frame to again claw within one run.
But with the tying run in scoring position, Andrew Wisner came on and got a big strikeout to end the threat and keep the Diamond Dogs on top.
Wisner then struck out two in a perfect ninth inning to close out the win and pick up the save for Cheney.
Miears, Conor Myles and Jaxson Holder each had two hits for the Diamond Dogs, while Hill paced the Aviators with three hits and Valdez finished with three RBIs.
Gavin Rogers started for the Diamond Dogs and gave up five runs, but just two earned and struck out four to be credited with the winning decision.
Cheney (35-6) hosts Haysville (20-16-1) tonight (July 21) in the final regular season night before the NBC World Series begins next week. First pitch is set for 7 pm at the Cheney Sports Complex.
