WICHITA, Kan. -- The Hutchinson Monarchs fell just short of reaching the semifinal round of the NBC World Series, as the Seattle (Wash.) Studs slipped by with a 2-1 win in 14 innings last night (Aug. 4) at Eck Stadium on the campus of Wichita State University.

After the Monarchs' run in the bottom of the first was immediately answered by the Studs in the second, neither team could scratch across a run over the next 11 innings.

Finally, the Studs plated an unearned tally in the 14th frame for what proved to be the game-winning run.

In the bottom of the 14th, Joey Baran doubled with one out and advanced to third on a balk, but the Studs' Roy Robles induced a fly out to end the game and preserve the win for Seattle.

Will Maynard was the definition of a tough-luck loser for the Monarchs, giving up just the unearned run while striking out 12 and walking none during eight brilliant innings on the mound.

Anthony Brady was also solid for the Studs, lasting nine innings and allowing just one run with six strikeouts.

Baran led the Monarchs with three hits and Alex Birge went 2-of-5 with a double and an RBI single in the first as Hutchinson's excellent 2022 campaign comes to a heartbreaking close.

Braeden Terry paced the Studs with a pair of hits on the night.
