HOCKEY: SPORTSGATE: NOV. 24, 2019: Kiara Zanon of Rochester, N.Y., scored a single goal in each of the Kingston JR's two road games this past weekend to become the first player in franchise history to hit the 20-goal mark and just the third to amass as many as 40 points in a season. The 17-year-old first-year Ice Wolves forward scored her 19th goal of the PWHL season in the team's 4-2 win over the Central York Jr. Panthers on Saturday and then added an empty-net goal on Sunday to finish off the scoring in a 3-1 win over the Barrie Jr. Sharks, giving her No. 20 on the season.

The previous single-season high was 19, reached by Alysha Burriss in the team's inaugural season, 2012-13, and matched by Tatum White last season. Zanon has scored at least one goal in each of the past six games, tying White for the franchise's longest consecutive-game goal streak, which she achieved last season.

League-leading scorer Zanon, in just 17 games, also has 40 points (20G, 20A) to tie Darcie Lappan's performance of last season (17G, 23A) for the second-most points in a single campaign. Alexa Hoskin holds the franchise points record of 42 (15G, 27A) set last season.

The two wins lifted the Ice Wolves into sole possession of first place with a 13-2-1-1 record for 28 points, one more than the Etobicoke Jr. Dolphins (11-1-4-1).  On Sunday, all of the game's scoring was done in the third period. Alexa Pongo netted a pair of goals less than five minutes apart prior to the period's midway point to put the Ice Wolves up 2-1, setting the stage for Zanon's empty-netter. The two goals gave Midhurst native Pongo 10 on the season, the second-highest total on the team. She has scored eight times in the past half-dozen games.

On Saturday, Sarah Roger started the scoring, which led to Kingston having a 3-0 lead before Central York rebounded on goals from Jordanna Connors, with 23 seconds left in the second, and Kaitlyn McKenna, 3:55 into the third, to make it a one-goal game. Pongo clinched the Kingston win with an empty-net goal with 42 seconds left in the third.
