Tough Weekend for Long Beach

Long Beach took on Loyola Marymount Friday night in their first WCHC action of the weekend. Unfortunately, a bad bounce in the opening seconds and an early injury to leading scorer, Kody Ichinaga, took the Beach out of the game. The hard working Lions didn't let up on the Beach and skated away with a 5-0 win. After the game, Head Coach Frank Mitrano said, "We have to come ready to play. When a puck doesn't bounce your way early, you have to find a way to move on and compete!"

Saturday night, Long Beach did exactly that in their second and final game of the weekend. Nick Gonzalez started for the Beach and shut the door on San Diego State Aztecs early. Forward Tyler Galgas got the scoring started early in the second and Cale Bechtel extended the lead before the period ended. Up 2-0, heading into the final period, Long Beach would let the Aztecs back into the game when they converted on a Beach penalty. Less than three minutes later the Aztecs would tie the game and send it to overtime. A late Beach penalty carried over into overtime and Gonzalez made several key saves early. After killing the penalty, the Aztecs landed themselves in the box and as the Beach did, killed off the two minutes. It didn't take long after that for the Aztecs to complete the comeback and win the game when they capitalized on a Beach turnover.

Long Beach is now 2-5-1 on the season and takes their first road trip next week to take on UNLV.
