Beach Unlucky in Vegas
Long Beach took to their road trip against Western powerhouse, UNLV Rebels, with a rather short bench.
The Beach, who already have a considerably small roster, had been hit with the injury bug and a suspension which reduced them to 11 skaters Friday night. It didn't seem to matter on the scoreboard as the Beach scored in the final few minutes to make the game 2-1 UNLV, heading into the locker room. The shot count told a different story as Beach net minder Tyler Gealy was hit with 58 shots throughout the game. Into the second and third periods, the Rebels would use their quick transition and strong offense to bury another three goals to put the Beach down 5-1. Evan Rush would bring the Beach within three by the half-way point of the third but it wouldn't be enough as the Rebels locked down defensively and took the 5-2 win.
Saturday night, the Beach was down to 10-men because of an additional injury Friday. Not that it would have made much of a difference as the Rebels came out strong and never looked back; the Beach would eventually fall 13-0.
The Beach (2-7-0-1) will be back to WCHC action next week when they host the Fullerton Titans on Friday and the Northridge Matadors on Saturday. When asked about the coming weekend, coach Mitrano said, "We need to get back on track next week against two local rivals. We need the points for the conference and we want to get back in the win column. Fullerton beat us at Staples Center earlier this season as part of the LA Kings College series and Northridge is undefeated at this point. These will be two important games for us!"
