Power play secures victories over San Jose State
Due to fires in the Santa Rosa area, our game against Santa Rosa was canceled. Long Beach extends their best wishes to the players, staff, family, friends, and community affected by the fires.
@ San Jose
Saturday night Long Beach traveled to Sharks Ice at Fremont for the first of two-games against San Jose State.
An early power play goal by Kody Ichinaga, off of a cross-ice pass from Adam Stanovich would put the team up 1-0. The game continued back and forth through the first period until San Jose capitalized late and the teams entered the first intermission tied 1-1.
The second period started slowly as neither team wanted to give up the next goal. Fortunately, the Beach opened up the scoring seven minutes in on slap-shot from defenseman, Blake Rivera. Michael Hakimi would add a power-play goal half-way through the period and Tanner Bleyle would score on a turnover just six-seconds later. Beach leading goal scorer, Luke Miller, would extend the lead to 6-1 with two power-play goals before the end of the period. Even with a late San Jose goal, the Beach headed into the final period up 6-2.
A Michael Hakimi goal, 26-seconds into the final frame would see the Beach on their way to a 9-3 final over the home team. Beach goalie, Tyler Gealy, earned his first win of the season by stopping 35 shots.
@ San Jose
Sunday afternoon, San Jose and Long Beach met for a rematch of the previous night’s game. A Francis Lemay goal early in the first period seemed to be bringing a repeat of Saturday. This would not be the case as San Jose goalie, Edward Berlin, made 49 saves on the afternoon. Beach netminder, Adam Moroz, kept pace as required and the teams would enter the final frame with only Lemay’s goal on the board.
Again, it would be the power play to get the Beach going as Michael Hakimi would find Kody Ichinaga open in front for the 2-0 lead. The teams would trade goals through the remainder of the game and the Beach would come away with a 4-2 win.
Long Beach heads back home with a record of 4-1-0 to face-off with a local rival, Cal State Northridge.
