Beach struggle before finally ending losing streak
vs Loyola Marymount
Thursday night Loyola Marymount came back to Lakewood Ice for the second of three meetings between the two teams this season.
The teams were evenly matched in the first period as the teams traded goals early on. Newcomer, Ryan Schlerf, would put the Beach up late with a slap shot off the rush from just inside the blue line. The puck would ring off both posts before hitting the back of the net and putting the Beach up 2-1. Blake Sundy helped increase the lead 12 seconds into the second period off a pass from Luke Miller out of the corner.
Everything seemed to be heading in the right direction for Long Beach as they controlled the play and held a 3-1. Unfortunately, as they had so many times before, Long Beach put themselves in the penalty box and Loyola took advantage by scoring two power play goals on their way to four unanswered goals through the second and third periods. Kody Ichinaga would add a garbage time goal with one second left in the game. The 5-4 loss marks the sixth game this season that the Beach have lost by one goal.
@ Loyola Marymount
Frustration filled the locker room Friday night as the Beach entered the final game of the Fall semester on a six game losing streak.
The team looked to be on their way to a seventh straight loss when Loyola scored two minutes into the game. Kody Ichinaga and Blake Sundy had other plans as each passed one another goals before the period ended and Long Beach was up 2-1 after one.
Even when Loyola tied the game midway through the second, there was a different feel in the air. Long Beach would not be turned away as they outshot Loyola 28-13 through the game. Francis Lemay and Matt Hoeksema would add goals in the second to make the game 4-2 after two.
The game opened up in the third as Adam Stanovich, Luke Miller, Joseph Toews, and Blake Rivera all added goals, sealing the 8-2 win.
Long Beach finishes the Fall semester 6-8-0.
Please join us in congratulation and offering our best wishes to graduating students, Joseph Toews and Blake Sundy!
