Long Beach Home Opener

Friday: Long Beach State University (LBSU)- 3 vs Loyola Marymount University (LMU)-5

Long Beach came out of the gates looking fresh and excited for the new season to start. They would start the scoring early in the first period with a goal by Ryan Osterkamp. LBSU was strong defensively in the first period and continued early in the second. Luke Miller added to the lead midway through the second frame. Going down 2-0 didn’t sit well with the Loyola Marymount players. They would start applying more pressure as the second period rolled along. LMU took advantage of penalties taken by LBSU and scored 2 power play goals to tie the game. Loyola carried that momentum and turned the tide of the game by scoring 4 unanswered goals before the second period was over. Going into the 3rd period with some desperation, Beach was able to close the gap and make it a 4-3 game. LMU would answer later to lock up a 5-3 victory, spoiling the Long Beach home opener.

Saturday: LBSU- 19 vs Chapman University- 0

The Beach came out seeking to avenge their opening night loss, and they did that in an explosive style by scoring 19 goals. The goals came early and often for LBSU against their division rival Chapman. Multiple players had big offensive nights, highlighted by hat tricks for Matt Dove and Luke Miller. Chapman did not have an answer for the hungry Long Beach State hockey team. Tyler Gealy recorded the first shutout of the season behind a strong defensive effort. The performance earned the team its first victory of the season and improve their record to 1-1.

The boys are back next weekend with a pair of home games against University of California San Diego on Friday, and then take on the University of San Diego on Saturday. Both games are scheduled for a 7:35pm start time.
