Long Beach Endures Tough Trip To Arizona
The Long Beach State hockey team traveled to Arizona last weekend looking forward to the challenge of playing on the road for the first time this season. The trip didn’t quite go as planned however, as they lost both contests. Thursday night they took on Northern Arizona University(NAU), then on Friday faced off against Grand Canyon University(GCU).

Long Beach arrived in Flagstaff for this game, and it appeared like they were ready to play. Taking an early 1-0 lead on a goal by Ryan Oterkamp. That lead would last all the way into the 2nd period when NAU started to take over the game. Northern Arizona would score 4 unanswered goals, and seemed to carry the pace of play in the middle frame. LBSU would inch closer with a goal at 12:42 of the 3rd period, scored by Nick Schrepfer. That momentum didn’t last long because NAU would answer with two more goals of their own to put the game out of reach. Despite the loss, Adam Moroz was stellar all night for Long Beach, Stopping 39 out of 45 shots on goal.

For the second night in a row it was Long Beach striking first, and again on a goal scored by Ryan Osterkamp. The game saw a lot of back and forth action in the first period, with LBSU holding onto a 3-2 lead heading into the locker room. Grand Canyon University seemed to find it’s legs in the intermission, because they came out and scored 6 unanswered goals in the 2nd period. It seems as though the 2nd period of games has been an issue for Long Beach all season up to this point. Again the Beach would fight back in the 3rd, but it was too late and GCU would hold on to win by a score of 11-6. Four LBSU players finished the game with 2 or more points: Luke Miller(3G,1A), Nick Schrepfer(1G,2A), Francis Lemay(1G,1A), and Matthew Hoeksema(0G,2A).
