Back On Track
Friday October 26: Long Beach State(LBSU) 8 Vs University of Southern California(USC) 3
It was the first matchup between these two teams, after USC cancelled a game that was scheduled for earlier in the season. Long Beach seemed to have a chip on it’s shoulder after losing two games last weekend, and they were able to jump out to an early lead in this game. By scoring a goal just over 2 minutes into the contest, it was a power play goal scored by Ryan Osterkamp. Special teams played a huge role in this one, because the teams combined for 63 penalty minutes on 26 infractions. It was a chippy game throughout, and LBSU made the most of the extra attacker in the first period. Jumping out to a 3-0 lead on 3 straight power play goals. That momentum carried over into the second period when Long Beach extended it’s lead to 5-0 on Matthew Dove’s 2nd goal of the night. From that point on the game was never in question with the teams trading goals back and forth. Matthew Dove and Ryan Osterkamp both finished the night with 2 goals, and Tyler Gealy got the win in net for LBSU stopping 20 out of 23 shots on goal.
Saturday October 27: Long Beach State(LBSU) 4 Vs California State University- Northridge(CSUN) 3
This was a very crucial WCHC Hockey matchup with two of the top three teams in the conference facing off. It was easy to tell that this was a big game, because both teams came out of the gate looking strong. Long Beach would get the all important first goal of the game in familiar fashion, on a power play goal by Ryan Osterkamp. CSUN came right back with a goal of their own less then a minute later to tie the game 1-1. It would stay that way until the second period. LBSU made a conscious effort this weekend to get better results in the middle frame, and they did on this night scoring two goals. With another one being scored on the power play by Ryan Schlerf, who fired a missile over the goalies shoulder to give the Beach a 2-1 lead. Francis Lemay extended the lead late in the period with a partial breakaway when he shot one over the goalies pad on the short side of the net to make it 3-1. Long Beach held that lead until halfway thru the third period when CSUN would get a power play goal of their own to cut the deficit to one. LBSU was not phased by this, and would answer with a goal by Austin Stanovich. This goal ended up being the game winning goal, because Northridge would add another goal with 3 minutes remaining in the game. Adam Moroz shut the door after that, not allowing CSUN to tie the game. Long Beach would hang on for a thrilling 4-3 victory over their conference rivals.
