The Streak Continues For The Beach
Friday November 2: Long Beach State (LBSU) 9 Vs UC Santa Barbara (UCSB) 3
Long Beach defeated the newest member of the WCHC UC Santa Barbara 9-3 on Friday night. All the scoring happened during the first two periods of play, and special teams played a huge role in deciding this game. LBSU took command early by scoring 2 goals in the first 2 minutes of play. With the first goal being scored by Austin Stanovich and the other by Luke Miller. The pace of the game seemed to slow down after that because of penalties being taken. Long Beach was penalized a total of 9 times for 18 minutes throughout the game. They didn’t let that bother them too much, as they would go on to score 4 shorthanded goals. UCSB would capitalize 3 times with the man advantage, which is where all their offense came from. It was a stellar performance for Long Beach as they outshot Santa Barbara 51-21. Austin Stanovich and Matthew Dove both contributed in a major way with 5 points each, and Luke Miller tallied a hat trick for LBSU. Adam Moroz had another good night in net stopping 18 of 21 shots on goal.
Saturday November 3: Long Beach State (LBSU) 7 @ California State University Fullerton (CSUF) 4
These schools are longtime rivals and it was easy to tell that was the case. Early on in this game, both teams were being very aggressive trying to establish physical play. It was Long Beach who would jump out to an early 2-0 lead on goals scored by Nicholas Schrepfer and Evan Rusch. They held onto that lead into the second period. Which is when Fullerton started to gain some momentum, partly because Long Beach kept getting called for penalties. CSUF would capitalize on power play opportunities scoring 3 of their 4 goals with the man advantage. Fullerton held a brief 4-3 lead until Francis Lemay would answer with a power play goal of his own right before the second period ended. The game was tied 4-4 heading into the third period. Both goalies came out strong to start the final period, not allowing a goal in the first 14 minutes. Brandon Hoeksema finally broke thru for LBSU by scoring a shorthanded goal with just over 5 minutes remaining in the game. That goal turned out to be the game winner for The Beach who added a couple more from Francis Lemay to complete his hat trick. Tyler Gealy got the win in net stopping 29 out of 33 shots on goal.
This brought Long Beach’s win streak to 4 games and record to 8-3-1 overall. Also brought them up to a tie for 1st place in the WCHC standings.
