Saturday December 1, 2018: Long Beach State (LBSU) 2 AT Loyola Marymount University (LMU) 3

Long Beach came into this game looking to even the season series after dropping the first game of the season to Loyola Marymount. However, LMU would strike first with a goal on the power play, early in the first period. This goal sent the home crowd into a frenzy, as they tossed over 100 teddy bears on the ice. Those teddy bears will be donated to a children’s charity for the holiday season. After a short delay to clear the ice, Long Beach looked to gain back momentum. LBSU would answer back with a power play goal of their own, scored by Ryan Schlerf. Following that goal, both teams seemed to tighten up defensively. The game became more physical, and there were a lot of penalties handed out by the referees. This made it difficult to find any flow to the game. Beach would finally capitalize on the power play, with another goal by Ryan Schlerf. It was a great effort and cross-ice pass delivered from Nicholas Schrepfer over to Schlerf, where he fired a shot short side to beat the LMU goalie. This goal made it 2-1 early in the second period, but the penalties continued to pile up for Long Beach. Loyola was able to tie the game on yet another power play goal 7 minutes into the third period. The game remained deadlocked for the remainder of the third, and headed into overtime. A penalty at the end of regulation and then a 5-minute major penalty 45 seconds into overtime, gave Loyola a 5 on 3 advantage. LMU’s Gregory Bennett would end the game shortly after, when he scored on a shot that trickled through LBSU’s goalie Tyler Gealy. This game was very evenly matched with Long Beach outshooting Loyola 33-31, but it’s simply hard to win when you give up 12 power play opportunities throughout the game. The Long Beach hockey team will now have some time off as it is their holiday break.
