A Note on Steve Beneke
I have heartbreaking and sad news to convey regarding my dear friend Steve Beneke’s extremely serious medical situation. Steve is in ICU, in a coma, and on life support. Steve is the longtime equipment manager, trainer, assistant coach and jack of all trades for the University of Georgia Hockey team. If any of you have played UGA in the past 20-years, you will know who Steve is.
Steve is also a certified referee. Last night, he was officiating a men’s league game in Duluth, GA and a fight broke out. Steve tried to break up the fight and was thrown violently to the ice with his head striking the ice first. Steve was taken by ambulance to the emergency room with bleeding of the brain.
His condition worsened today and he is now in a coma in ICU. Please post this Go Fund Me link with the details of his situation on your team’s websites, and please pray for Steve.
Steve could be seen constantly leaving the Georgia bench and rushing towards the other team’s locker room to repair skates, helmets, etc., for players from the other team. I’ve seen him do this many times to include helping my own players when I coached Georgia Tech. The guy loves the ACHA and our college hockey family and I am hoping our hockey community will rally around him.
The Georgia Hockey players, alumni, coaches, parents, and fans are devastated and could use your prayers for this wonderful man.
