SALT LAKE CITY, UT- Junior Forward Adam Wowryk scored a first-period hattrick, and senior goaltender Josh Bykowski stopped 23 as the Beavers cruised to an 8-1 win over the Utah Utes.
The Beavers offense got off to a blazing start! Just under two minutes into the first period Adam Wowryk capped off a nice two on one play for his 28thof the season to make it 1-0 Beavers. Wowryk wasn’t done there, moments later he pounced on a loose puck in the slot and ripped it home to make it 2-0. Things got physical when Cochrane got into a pushing match after the whistle, and that gave the Utes a powerplay, despite hitting a post, it stayed 2-0 Beavers. Then with 8:00 left in frame Wowryk completed the natural hattrick for his 30thof the campaign. Wowryk is the first Beaver to score 30 goals in a single season since Jeremy Johnson back in the 2015-16 season when he scored 30. Bykowski got the call in net for the Beavers and stopped all five shots he faced. The Beavers outshot the Utes 14-5 in the opening frame
In the middle frame, the Beavers wasted zero time adding to the lead. Under 30 seconds into the second period, senior forward Alex Bechtold slipped one through traffic to make it 4-0, it was Bechtold’s first of the season. Then moments later off a Wowryk scoring chance, senior forward Johl Swedlo fired a puck from the corner and it banked in off the goaltender’s skate and in the net to make it 5-0. The Utes got a couple of powerplays to try and get back into the game but Bykowski and the penalty killers were successful. The Beavers made it 6-0 when Justin Metcalf roofed one top shelf on the backhand. Then late in the second-period frustration boiled over for the Utes and a couple of scrums broke out, resulting in Davis Sheldon getting tossed from the game for fighting. The Utes got one on the powerplay to make it 6-1 late on an Alex King point shot in the second period. The Beavers outshot the Utes 8-7 in the second period.
In the third period the Beavers coasted to a victory, Blake Fournier added a goal to make it 7-1, Bechtold added his second of the night to make it 8-1. More rough stuff transpired and a Ute got ejected for head contact.
“I was extremely proud of our guys this weekend,” said Head Coach Wade Regier. “This was the shortest bench we had coming on a road trip and the boys really stepped up. Whenever someone’s number was called they did their job. Great final weekend before the national tournament bracket is set.”
With the win the Beavers improve to 29-4-3 on the season, they will be in action next weekend against in-state rival Jamestown Jimmies.
