Battle of the Birds: Red Hawks Fall Short in Tight Match Against The Blue Hens
The Montclair State University Red Hawks hosted the University of Delaware Blue Hens at Floyd Hall Arena at 8:30 pm on Friday, October 3rd, in what turned out to be a thrilling Battle of the Birds.
The first period set the tone for a defensive showdown. Both teams secured early penalties, keeping the pressure high. Midway through the period, Delaware’s #22 Vicenzo Varriale beat the Red Hawk defense with a goal assisted by #8 Anthony Greco. The Red Hawks were unable to answer back before the buzzer. The Blue Hens finished the first period 1–0.
The second period featured even more physical play, with multiple penalties called on both sides. Montclair State found its rhythm and tied the game thanks to a shorthanded goal by #24 Ryan Targove, assisted by #97 Chris Walusz. The Red Hawks’ hustle and effort brought the score to 1–1 heading into the third period.
In the final period, the game remained locked until Delaware capitalized on a power play. #4 Joey Engleman scored the eventual game-winner, pushing the Blue Hens ahead 2–1.
Both goaltenders had standout performances. Montclair’s #35 Tony Macaluso and Delaware’s #35 Dominic Saputelli each faced 25 shots, keeping their teams in the game from start to finish.
