2016/2017 SEASON LOOKS PROMISING FOR MONTCLAIR STATE WOMEN'S HOCKEY

It's hard to believe that just 3 short years ago the Montclair State Women's Hockey Team was comprised of 5 women who wanted to start a team and had little playing experience. Presently, the team has 11 rostered players and 9 of them have substantial experience. The team in general has grown in talent that both the team and staff do believe they can qualify for regional play or even the national tournament this season.

The 2015/2016 season was a great stepping stone for the team as the Red Hawks played some pretty stiff competition in Liberty University and the University of New Hampshire. with and overall record of 6-7-0-0 last season the Red Hawks finished 9th overall in the East Regional ranking for the ACHA DII level. This season, with the addition of much needed experience, the Red Hawks will battle Liberty University 4 times, UConn, U Del, and Navy once each. They also have 6 non-league games against 2 U19 tier 1 programs and Rutgers University.

Returning players like CJ Verrico, Britt Meneghin, Mikaela Schultz, and Alex Tepper (amongst others) provide a solid nucleus of talent, while newcomers Amanda Peterson, Kristen Iattarelli, Nora Fogarty, Paula Bush, and Victoria Nicolosi will add tremendous depth to the roster in general. The only hurdle the Lady Hawks will need to climb seems to be in net. Returner Kawanne Ferguson, a third year player, has volunteered to play goal this year. This provides a challenge for the team, but Ferguson has looked good thus far in goal.

With the interest in the program rising and letters of interest coming in, it sure seems that there will be no shortage of talent coming to Monclair State to play for the women's team. All the team needs to do is win a majority of their games against their ACHA opponents to potentially qualify for the post season, no easy feat yet attainable.
