RED HAWKS FALL TO THE UNIVERSITY OF DELAWARE
The Women's Hockey team fell by a score of 6-1 to the University of Delaware on Sunday afternoon. As many would say, the outcome isn't positive, the Red Hawks view it as such. Coming into this season they have retained their top talent and added some much needed depth. The only hiccup in the plans came when an incoming recruit, a goalie, decided against coming to Montclair State late in the summer and past the application deadline. This left the Red Hawks with 11 experienced skaters and no goaltender. Be that as it may, junior Kawanne Ferguson stepped up in early September as the sole volunteer to tend goal for the team. With little learning curve, Ferguson acquired equipment and suited up. In the first two preseason games against the Montclair Blues U19 and the Jersey Shore Wildcats U19, the Red Hawks outshot their opponents handedly, but fell in those games 4-2 and 2-0. In their first ACHA contest of the season, the University of Delaware scored three goals in the first period to open up a substantial lead. With a no quit attitude they continued to outshoot their opponent and surrendered 2 late goals in the second period, one of which the buzzer may have sounded before the puck crossed the line. In the third period Freshman Paula Bush scored her first career goal off of a rebound from a Britt Meneghin shot. The Red Hawks would finish with 24 shots on goal to their opponents 22, once again showing that they can hang in there against established and good teams. The Red Hawks will have a 2 weekend layoff before traveling to Liberty for a 2 game road trip which looms large for the team as Liberty is Perennially one of the best teams in the East Region.
