After a tough loss to the West Point Golden Knights, the Montclair State University Lady Red Hawks responded with urgency and execution, claiming their first win of the season in their home opener. On Friday, October 25, the Red Hawks defeated the Lafayette College Leopards 6–3 at Floyd Hall Arena, fueled by a breakout performance from defender Kaitlyn Dean and a strong showing from goaltender Jessica Bleeker.

From the opening puck drop, both teams tested each other defensively. The Leopards broke through first, capitalizing on an early opportunity that forced Montclair State to shift gears offensively. The Red Hawks didn’t take long to respond — Dean evened the score just seconds later, setting the tone for an aggressive offensive push that would define the rest of the night.

Lafayette regained a brief lead midway through the first period, but Montclair quickly regained control. Dean struck again, followed by Emma Simas, who netted her first goal as a Red Hawk off an assist from Sofia Alexandre and Kaitlyn Dean. By the end of the opening frame, Montclair State led 3–2 and had established clear momentum.

That momentum carried into the second period, where the Red Hawks’ offense found its rhythm. Within the first three minutes, Leenah Ramos scored her first collegiate goal, assisted by Dean. Moments later, Dean completed an impressive hat trick, further extending the Red Hawks’ lead.

Montclair State continued to dominate puck possession, keeping Lafayette on its heels. Bleeker anchored the defensive effort, turning away every shot she faced during the period. Late in the frame, Alexandre joined the scoring column, finishing a crisp passing sequence from Dean and Sammy Trainor to push the lead to 6–2 heading into the final period.

Lafayette managed one more goal in the third, but Bleeker remained composed, stopping 20 of the 23 shots she faced to secure the win. Her consistency in net — along with Dean’s six-point night — highlighted a balanced Redhawk performance that blended offensive aggression with defensive discipline.

The victory not only marked Montclair State’s first of the season but also showcased the team’s depth and adaptability following an early setback on the road.

Looking Ahead

The Lady Red Hawks will look to build on their momentum when they travel to Pennsylvania on Saturday, November 1, to face West Chester University at 5 p.m.
