Week 2 Preview: Marquette host DePaul, UWO takes on Aurora, and Concordia faces off against Lewis
Weekly Preview:
After just one conference matchup to start off the conference season the conference slate is in full effect during this second weekend as three series dominate the action. Conference leader Marquette University welcomes DePaul University to Brookfield, WI; Aurora University travels to University of Wisconsin Oshkosh for their first conference series of the season; and Concordia University WI and Lewis University begin their conference seasons at the Ozaukee Ice Center in Mequon, WI.
It is hard to know how the conference standing are going to transpire, but this weekend could give us a good glimpse of the future. No one wants to start the season off poorly, and then have to dig themselves out of the hole, so point maximization is key.
Marian University is also in action this weekend, taking on non-conference opponent Sault College, in Fond du Lac, WI.
Marquette University battles DePaul University:
Marquette University battles DePaul University this weekend in Brookfield, WI. By virtue of their four point weekend against University of Wisconsin Oshkosh, Marquette is currently in first place in the conference standings, a spot they are not too unfamiliar with as last season they were near the top for most of the season. For DePaul this is the start of their conference season and after squeaking into the conference tournament last season they will be looking to improve on those results.
Both teams were on the ice last weekend, Marquette swept UWO, winning 4-3 and 3-2(OT), while DePaul defeated University of Illinois. As a result, they each have good vibes heading into this matchup.
During their meeting last season each team won a game. Marquette won game one of the series 6-4 and DePaul won the second game 5-3. Last year’s split pushed the all-time regular season record to 3-1, one win coming in overtime, in favor of DePaul. So, to this point, DePaul has had Marquette’s number, but you can be assured Marquette is going to do all they can to reverse that trend.
University of Wisconsin Oshkosh welcomes Aurora University:
The University of Wisconsin Oshkosh welcomes Aurora University to Oshkosh, WI for this seasons conference matchup. This series marks the start of conference play for Aurora but is the second for UWO. Aurora was last season conference tournament runner up and has yet to finish outside the top two since they joined in 2017.
Each team was in action last weekend. UWO took on Marquette University, losing both games, 4-3 and 3-2 (OT), in the extremely close series. Aurora participated in the Trine University Invite and played three games against top teams in the ACHA D2. They were able to pull out a 3-2 victory against Trine University but fell 7-5 to Davenport University and 7-3 to Lindenwood University. So, neither team has much positive momentum heading into this clash, however, UWO does have the advantage of home ice.
Last season, UWO and Aurora only met during the regular season and Aurora swept the series, winning both games by a score of 6-2. UWO is still looking for their first victory against this formidable opponent and Aurora seeks to keep their undefeated streak going.
Concordia University WI hosts Lewis University:
Concordia University WI hosts Lewis University at the Ozaukee Ice Center in Mequon, WI. This meeting starts the conference season for both teams as they look to rebound from missing last season’s conference tournament.
CUW comes into this contest on a hot streak, having swept Maryville University last weekend, winning 3-2(SO) and 7-5, and sweeping Purdue University Northwest two weeks earlier. While Lewis was idle last weekend they come into this series on the opposite end of the spectrum, having been swept by Bradley University, by scores of 5-3 and 5-2, two weekends ago.
Lewis will be trying to even their regular season record against CUW in this series as last season CUW swept the series by scores of 5-3 and 3-2. A sweep by either team will help further their quest to make it to the conference tournament; CUW for the first time and Lewis after missing the last two.
Non-Conference:
Marian University v. Sault College
Idle:
Robert Morris University – Maroon
