Week 2 Review: CUW overpowers Lewis
Concordia University WI harbored no ill effects from their trip to Missouri in their clash with Lewis University. Over the course of the two game series CUW notched an astounding 24 goals on an even more impressive 167 shots on net while only giving up five goals. The resulting sweep gives CUW four points and an early leading in the Black Division standings.
DePaul University took both games in the home and home, inter-division series, with UW Milwaukee.
In non-conference action, Marian University went 1-2 in the Minnesota Showcase, losing to University of Mary and Liberty University but defeating University of Minnesota, Aurora University lost to Purdue University Northwest D1, Northern Michigan University was swept by Lake Superior State University, Roosevelt University defeated Indiana Tech in overtime and St. Norbert College was swept by Michigan Tech.
Concordia University WI offense too much for Lewis University:
In Friday nights opening game of the series between Concordia University WI and Lewis University, Lewis’ Josh McDonald put the first tally on the board at 6:13 of the first period. Assisting on McDonald’s goal were Jack Sellman and Matthew Moro. The lead would only last 1:27 when Alexandre Way, assisted by Easton William, found the back of the net. Thomas Cassel notched his first goal of the game at the 12:09 mark, assisted by John Sherman and Wyatt Wilderman, giving CUW a 2-1 lead. Just under five minutes later Scott Gregor, assisted by Ian Malcolmson, scored to put CUW up by two.
The second period would start with CUW holding a 3-1 lead and then at the 4:50 mark John Swiatek, assisted by Connor Doyle and Michael Fradette, put CUW up by three. Lucas Krueser, assisted by W. Wilderman and Rex Staudacher, lit the lamp at 11:25. A power play goal by Way at 14:09 increased the score to 6-1 in favor of CUW. Lewis stemmed the tide at 16:15 with a power play goal of their own. Scoring their second goal of the game was Sellman, with assists by Jack Reedy and Matthew Moro.
After taking 66 shots over the course of the first two periods, and surrendering six goals, Michael Fischer was replaced by Christian Rorer in net. Rorer was promptly welcomed to the game by Ian Malcolmson 49 seconds into the third. Malcolmson’s goal, assisted by Garrett Wilderman and Gregor, not only put CUW back up by five but would open the scoring floodgates. Sixty-seven seconds later Nicholas Roberts put puck to twine to make the score 8-2. Samuel Weiss, assisted by Way and Krueser, got in on the scoring with a goal at the 5:54 mark. A minute later the score increased for CUW once again when Gregor lit the lamp off assists by G. Wilderman and Malcolmson. CUW’s eleventh goal of the night came off the stick of Jacob Palmerio, with assists by Cassel and Sherman, at the 10:48 mark. Malcolmson bookended scoring for the third period with his second goal at 16:11, providing the final score of 12-2.
Earning the victory for CUW was Ian Robertson, stopping 20 of the 22 shots he faced. Taking the loss was Fischer, who turned away 60 of the 66 shots he faced. In relief, Rorer stopped 25 of the 31 shots on goal.
CUW wasted little time continuing their scoring streak in game two as Scott Gregor scored 43 seconds into the game, assisted by Ian Malcolmson and Garrett Wilderman. Lucas Krueser, assisted by Samuel Weiss and Alexandre Way, put CUW up by two at the 7:25 mark. A John Sherman goal at 10 minutes, assisted by Thomas Dyball and Jacob Palmerio, increased the lead to three. Way, assisted by Lucas Hefty and Weiss, would find the back of the net with 1:29 left before the first intermission, to make the score 4-0.
G. Wilderman got in on the goal scoring with his first of the game at the 4:05 mark of the second period, increasing the CUW lead to five. After two first period assists, Weiss lit the lamp, assisted by Way and Thomas Dyball, at 5:34. The third and final goal of the second period came off the stick of CUW’s Dyball during the powerplay, assisted by Malcolmson and G. Wilderman, at the 6:04 mark.
Just shy of two minutes into the third period, Krueser tallied his second goal of the game, assisted by Way and Weiss, to make the score 8-0. After surrendering eight goals, Lewis finally removed the zero under their name on the scoreboard at the 4:26 mark when Matthew Moro, assisted by Jake Welninski and Jack Sellman, hit pay dirt. Alex Arquilla made it two straight Lewis goals 1:14 later, assisting were Michael Ligas and Moro. At the 8:08 mark, Thomas Cassel, assisted by Sherman and Jacob Palmerio, made the score 9-2 in favor of CUW. Another puck found the back of the net off the stick of a CUW player, this time Connor Doyle, at 9:50, assisting was Rex Staudacher. Brian Gutt, assisted by Scottie Ernsting and Michael Ligas, scored the third Lewis goal of the game at 11:46. Sherman’s second goal of the game would get put up on the board at the 13:37 mark, with assists by Krueser and Way. The game’s final goal, and 12th of the game for CUW, was scored at the 14:10 mark, credited with assists were Sherman and Cassel.
Ian Robertson took the win for the second game in a row. Over his 27:02 of ice time he stopped all six shots he faced. His replacement, Jacob Hoover, played the remaining 32:58 and stopped 11 of the 14 shots he faced. Michael Fischer took the loss while stopping 58 of the 70 shots he faced.
Inter-Division Games:
DePaul University swept UW Milwaukee, winning 5-1 on Friday and 7-4 on Saturday.
Non-Conference Games:
Marian University lost to University of Mary 3-0 on Friday, lost to Liberty University 3-2 on Saturday, and defeated University of Minnesota 4-2 on Sunday.
Aurora University lost to Purdue University Northwest D1 by a score of 7-0 on Saturday.
Northern Michigan University was swept by Lake Superior State University, losing 5-0 on Friday and 10-0 on Saturday.
Roosevelt University defeated Indiana Tech 6-5(OT) on Friday.
St. Norbert College was swept by Michigan Tech, losing 8-1 on Friday and 8-3 on Saturday.
