NYU Hockey Names Senior Defenseman James Moeller Alternate Captain
By Hunter Estevez
As the NYU Hockey team celebrates a successful opening game for the 2018-19 season, Head Coach Christopher Cosentino named senior defenseman, James Moeller, an alternate captain. Moeller joins senior John Kowalewski and junior Brandon Ritchey as alternate captains. Senior Mason Gallegos was named team captain in the offseason. Cosentino discusses the thought put into building a strong leadership core for the 2018-19 season;
“When selecting captains, it can't be all the same type of personality, you need a good mix to make sure that everyone on the team has someone they can relate to and communicate well with,” Cosentino said in reference to naming this season’s captains, “... James has always been an incredible student/athlete and someone our players look up to. He is deserving of this honor, but I also think his personality adds a different dynamic to our leadership.”
A senior defenseman from Phoenix, Arizona, Moeller is in his fourth year playing for NYU Hockey as the team continues at the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) Division I level. Moeller balances his study of economics in NYU’s College of Arts and Science with his ambition to help bring the goals of NYU Hockey to fulfillment.
As the only defenseman in the leader group, Moeller offers a different perspective;
“We knew we wanted to add a defenseman as a captain. We never have to worry about Moels. He's a strong student, he is always in the gym and he competes hard every day in practices and games. I have always been impressed with his character and I know his teammates respect him as well.”
