Kingston, RI — The NYU Violets split the weekend with the University of Rhode Island on October 12th and October 13th at the Brad Boss Arena.
The NYU Violets had a rough start to the weekend as they lost their first away game of the season on Friday night. The Rams took the lead in the first period with three goals under their belt and NYU’s third penalty of the night had URI start the second period on a power play.
NYU had a strong second period when Mason Gallegos scored on the power play from Brandon Ritchey and Blake Howard which cut the deficit to two goals as they went into the third period. The Violets lost their momentum when defensemen James Long and Andrew Williamson received penalties at the start of the third period, giving URI the 5 on 3 advantage. Three Ram goals in the final period gave the first game of the weekend to URI 6-1. NYU Goaltender Adam Salisbury made 35 saves in the losing effort.
NYU bounced back on Saturday when Brandon Ritchey scored the first goal of the game to set the pace for the Violets. However, a URI goal and NYU penalties to John Kowalewski and Moeller ended the first period with a 1-1 tie and a two-man advantage for the Rams.
A URI penalty in the second period led to 4 on 4 hockey, and an NYU goal by defenseman James Moeller gave the Violets the confidence needed to finish the weekend strong. NYU powered through two penalty kills, ending the second period with a one goal lead. Alex Hopkins scored two goals in the third period and John Kowalewski sealed the 5-2 victory with an empty net goal from Scott Mulligan and James Long. Goaltender Patrick Cavanaugh picked up his second win of the season after making 37 saves.
“I thought we came out flat on Friday night against a good URI team and were not ready to handle their pressure,” said NYU Head Coach Chris Cosentino. “We were able to bounce back on Saturday thanks to some great goaltending from Cav and timely goals in the 3rd period.”
The Violets improve to 2-1 on the season and are back on the road next weekend as they head down to Virginia to play the Liberty Flames on October 19th and October 20th at the LaHaye Ice Center.
