NYU Sweeps Weekend Games on Road in New Jersey

By Madi Perez

Wayne, NJ / South Brunswick, NJ – NYU defeated William Paterson University and Rutgers University during an away weekend in New Jersey.

Friday night, for the first time at the ACHA Division I level, NYU squared-off against their former rival, William Paterson University. “It was good to beat William Paterson at their rink,” said senior, Jack Orne, “We haven’t done that before and it was fun playing an old rival like them.”

After three NYU power plays, and many great saves from junior, Patrick Cavanaugh, the first period ended scoreless. Towards the end of a back and forth second period, sophomore Richie Doherty put NYU on the board with assists going to junior Kohl Donovan, and senior John Kowalewski.

The pressure heightened at the start of the third period when William Paterson tied the score at 1-1. But, that didn’t stop senior Mason Gallegos, from scoring a short-handed goal, putting NYU back into the lead. Freshman, James Long, and sophomore, Alex Hopkins, picked up the assists. Scoring NYU’s third goal of the evening was Kowalewski, assisted by junior Sam Rappaport. “The William Patterson game got physical, and those are the games I love,” Rappaport said. “I just try to bring the team so energy and work my hardest.”

With less than 6 minutes left in the game, and William Paterson collecting two more penalties, Alex Hopkins scores, while Orne and Long pick up assists on the power play goal. The game against William Paterson closes with NYU winning 4-1. Goaltender Patrick Cavanaugh received his fourth win of the season after stopping 33 of the 34 shots he faced.

Sunday, NYU geared up to take on Rutgers University at the Pro Skate Arena. With one victory under their belt, the Violets stepped onto the ice with determine to get another. Captain Mason Gallegos, assisted by Sam Rappaport, scored the first goal of the night. Shortly after, Rutgers would tie the game. But the Violets answered right back with one minute remaining in the first period when senior Jack Orne scored to close out the first period with a 2-1 lead.

The Violets hit the ice strong in the second period with another goal scored by Richie Doherty. Despite being shorthanded after sophomore Andrew Williamson was sent to the box, NYU sophomore Alex Peck scored the fourth goal of night. Rutgers would add a goal at the end of the period to cut the NYU lead to 4-2.

Jack Orne was able to pick up his second goal of the night at the top of the third period. A power play goal from Andrew Williamson followed by another goal from Doherty put NYU up 7-2 with 12:00 left in the third period. Rutgers was able to score a power play goal late in the 3rd period, but as the final buzzer sounded the Violets were victorious, 7-3. Adam Salisbury won his first game of the season in net stopping 18 of 21 shots.

“It was a big morale boosting weekend after a few tough losses.  It was nice to see scoring come from both the forwards and the defense,” sophomore, Brian Taccone, said.

Come out to support the Violets as NYU hosts Syracuse University at Chelsea Piers December 7 and 8.
