By Hunter Estevez

Syracuse,  NY — NYU splits weekend against Syracuse Orange at Tennity Ice Pavilion.

Saturday night the NYU Violets geared up to play their first weekend series of the semester against Syracuse University after having put in hard work over break. The Violets returned to the Tennity Ice Pavilion after losing to Syracuse on home ice last semester.

After a scoreless first period, the second period heated up when #29 Frankie Horowitz scored his first goal of the season since returning from London, putting NYU in the lead 1-0. The goal was assisted by #10 Richie Doherty and by the newest Violet, #16 Adam Peck who played his first NYU game.

“It was great to put the NYU jersey on for the first time and represent the school. I was so glad to be able to play with my brother once again, as well as joining the rest of the boys on the ice for the first time. I’m excited to see what our team has in store for the rest of the season,” said freshman Adam Peck.

Syracuse quickly tied the game 1-1 with 15:57 left in the second period. Horowitz and Peck came together again for the last goal of the period scored by Horowitz and assisted by Peck with 13:00 remaining on the clock. After some Violet penalties, NYU started the third period shorthanded but leading 2-1.

The game grew heated after a shorthanded Syracuse goal tied the game at 7:55. NYU had a successful penalty kill when penalties to #9 Brandon Ritchey and #16 Adam Peck meant 5-on-3 on the ice. At 15:86, a goal by #10 Doherty gave NYU a one goal lead but it was soon matched 25 seconds later with a Syracuse goal. Regulation ended with a tied game 3-3 and the game advanced to 3-on-3 overtime.

A scoreless overtime lead to a 3 player shoot out where goals by #29 Frankie Horowitz and #16 Adam Peck brought NYU the win in their first game back.

“It felt great being back with the boys and finding the back of the net,” Horowitz said about his return, “The boys are back and buzzing for the second half.”

The Violets returned with high hopes for Sunday’s game. Both teams took penalties in the first period and the Violets were challenged with 5-on-3 when both Captain #17 Mason Gallegos and #16 Adam Peck ended up in the box with penalties. The first period ended scoreless.

The period started with an NYU power play but turned when Syracuse scored two goals with 15:16 remaining on the clock. #11 Andrew Williamson and #19 Sam Rappaport landed in the box for cross checking and hooking respectively, leading to another 5-on-3 penalty kill by NYU.

Syracuse closed the second period with a final goal, leading 3-0. Third period had a handful of penalties on both sides and peaked when an altercation on the ice gave two Syracuse players two minute minors and ten minute misconducts and an additional player receiving a five minute major for checking from behind and a misconduct. NYU’s #24 Jack Orne received a two minute minor and a ten minute misconduct.

#27 Brian Taccone scored his first Violet goal with ten minutes left in the third period, assisted by #14 Parker Richards. NYU pulled goalie Adam Salisbury with 1:50 left on the clock in the hopes of tying the game but the game ended with Syracuse 3-1.

“It was a good feeling to score but a tough loss to close out a tough weekend on the road.” said Brian Taccone on his first NYU goal.

NYU will be back at Chelsea Piers this Friday, February 1st as they face off against Stony Brook.
