NYU Sweeps Weekend Against URI in Road Series

By Hunter Estevez

South Kingston, RI — The NYU Violets took the ice Friday and Saturday at Boss Ice Arena, defeating the University of Rhode Island Rams and going home with a weekend sweep.

The fight against URI Friday night proved challenging as first and second period passed without any goals from the Rams or Violets. NYU went into the third period determined and scored the first goal of the game. Senior Scott Mulligan put the puck in the net with an assist from sophomore, Adam Peck. URI quickly matched the goal, bringing the score 1-1 and demanding another goal from the Violets in order to take the game. Richie Doherty scored the game winning goal assisted by freshman David Rosales, giving NYU a 2-1 win. Senior Patrick Cavanaugh made 27 saves in the win.

“We knew it was going to take a tough goal to get it done,” said NYU junior Doherty, “Their goalie was playing great and we knew we just needed to get bodies to the net.”

Saturday night, NYU started strong with two goals in the first period from Parker Richards and James Long. An unassisted goal 31 seconds into the second period by Mulligan gave NYU a 3-0 lead. The rest of the second period was rocky for the Violets after URI scored two goals, decreasing NYU’s lead to 3-2. NYU freshman Aidan Wright scored another goal, his first as a Violet, but the Rams quickly matched it, ending the second period 4-3. Third period was intense with penalties being handed to both teams.  The score still 4-3, the Rams pulled their goalie with less than two minutes left in the third hoping an extra man on the ice could tie the game. With 28 seconds on the clock, senior Brandon Ritchey secured the win with an empty net goal assisted by Mac Brice and goalie Cavanaugh. NYU finished the weekend away with a 5-3 win. Cavanaugh finished the night with 47 saves in the win.
