Blades lose OT heartbreaker

March 10, 2012
7:00 PM EST

The Oakville Blades lost game three of the OJHL west division finals 3-2 in Georgetown last night, an overtime defeat that could have gone either way. The loss leaves the Blades trailing the best-of-seven series 2-1.

The Raiders goal with 4:38 left in the first OT period came on the powerplay for Georgetown. It was their second powerplay of the overtime, and on top of that the Raiders were also awarded a penalty shot early in the period.

The Raiders were not penalized in overtime in spite of a blatent too-many-men infraction earlier in the period -- the same call the officials jumped on the Blades for.

“We felt we could come in here and get a win but this is what happens when the officiating is brutal,” Blades captain Kyle Blaney told the Oakville Beaver after the game, encapsulating the team's frustration.

Phil Hampton scored Oakville's first goal from Stehan Thompson and Stephen Hickey to pull the teams into a tie.

Conor McGlynn gave the Blades the lead in the third from Ashton Anderson and Brad Kobryn before Georgetown tied the game a few minutes later. Oakville goalie James Prigione stoned Raiders' sniper and Oakville native Patrick Megganety on the penalty shot in OT and was stellar in goal for the Blades again.

Oakville carried most of the play through the second and third periods and into overtime, outshooting Georgetown 25-15 over the 2nd and 3rd periods, 32-26 through three periods and 41-36 overall. Those totals don't include a goal post early in the third period and another early in overtime.

In spite of the loss the Blades remained confident in the way their game is coming together. The team rests Sunday before resuming practice Monday and then hosting game four at 7:30pm Tuesday at Sixteen Mile Sports Complex. Game five is Wednesday night in Georgetown.

"We outplayed them, we just got some tough breaks," said McGlynn.
