Matt Kellenberger Named OJHL Defenceman of the Year

OAKVILLE, ONT. - The Oakville Blades are pleased to announce that defenceman Matt Kellenberger has been named the OJHL's Defenceman of the Year for the 2017-18 season.

Kellenberger, 19, is set to forgo the rest of his Junior A hockey career to make the jump to Princeton University of the NCAA, a school that will showcase his incredible intelligence and his tremendous hockey skills. The award finishes off a great season for the defenceman from North Toronto, a year that saw Kellenberger play in the CJHL Top Prospects Game, the CJHL Eastern Canada Cup and Team Canada East at the World Junior A Challenge.

With the Blades, Kellenberger finished with 81 points in 103 regular season games over two full seasons. His first three games as an AP in 2015-16 saw the young phenom record two assists, as well as an additional two assists in three playoff contests.

Kellenberger, who will study engineering at Princeton, finished this past season with 51 points, the second highest for all OJHL defencemen. Kellenberger would go on to record an additional nine points in the playoffs, beating out his previous total by two points in three less games.

Ranked the 178th North American skater by the NHL Central Scouting this season, Kellenberger went to Vancouver Canucks camp last season before returning back to Sixteen Mile Sports Complex in September. Kellenberger could become the third-straight Blades player to get drafted from the team to the NHL, following in the footsteps of Patrick Kudla (2016) and Bryce Misley (2017).

The Blades are so excited for Matt and can't wait to follow his career going forward!
